How to work through this course
Throughout this short course there are lessons (PowerPoints) for you to run through
to allow you to gain the knowledge to pass each unit.
Each unit is split into sections on the Moodle page, everything you need will be on the
Moodle page, so please check there first for what you need.
Each unit will have one lesson (PowerPoint) to go with it and will match up with your
study manuals and assessments.

In this unit we will:
LO1: Set up a digital device ready for use

LO2: Know how to use applications stored on the device

LO3: Know how to transfer data to and from the digital device

LO4: Know how to maintain the performance of the digital device

Let’s look at the iPhone X
Click here to look at the device or use your own device if you have one.
Make yourself familiar with the device. You could also use a tablet, laptop or computer to
demonstrate required actions.
Attempt to answer the following questions sharing knowledge in your Teams groups:
How would you power on this device?
How would you check that there is a sufficient battery level?
What could you do if the battery is low?
What are the default applications linked to this device (or a device you may use
which isn’t an iPhone)?
How would you adjust settings? (EG. Flight mode, brightness & volume?

Creating a Contact Card
This example is for an iPhone but other devices work in a similar way –
Share your experiences to help others.
Creating your own Contact Card on iPhone is similar to Creating a Contact
Card for any of your Contacts.
• 1. Open the Contacts app on your iPhone/iPad
• Note: In case you deleted or cannot find the Contacts App, you can
open the Phone app and tap on Contacts option located in the bottom
menu.
• 2. Once the Contacts app is open, tap on the + button from the top right
corner of your screen.
• 3. On the next screen, enter in your Name, Phone Number, Home
Address and other applicable details.
• 4. Once you have entered in your details save your Contact information
by tapping on Done from the top right corner of your screen.
Health & Safety using Digital Devices
Can you think of any issues of health and safety relating to the use of digital devices?
• Bad posture
• Back aches
• Neck and shoulder strain
• Finger joint pain
• Headaches
• Eye strain
• Obesity
Tip: Limit time spent on the devices and take regular breaks and move around and adjust
seating position.

Health & Safety using Digital Devices
Issues of health and safety relating to the use of digital devices:
• Overheating – risk of fire
• Spillages over an electrical device – electrocution
• Damaged cables from power supply – risk of fire or electrocution
Be careful not to cover the device, and to keep liquids (drinks) well away from the user area
How to store and retrieve data on a
digital device
If you were going to write out an important letter on a digital device where would you save it?
How would you save it?
If you wanted to return to the letter after a few weeks how would you find it again?

There are many options across digital devices.

You have the search box on Windows
You have ‘Spotlight Search’ on Apple devices

How to Transfer Data
Firstly we need to look at connection methods… What do you think these are?
Ethernet cable is something that will connect your electronic device (computer, tablet,
gaming console, etc.) to a network, which, in turn, will allow you to have internet
access
Wi-Fi is the name of a wireless networking technology that uses radio waves to
provide wireless high-speed Internet and network connections

A dongle is basically a very little modem with the ability to connect to wireless or
mobile broadband the same as the broadband on your smartphone. When you plug a
dongle into a computer, your computer is essentially connected to a modem and can
get online.
NFC stands for Near Field Communication. Essentially, it's a way for your phone to
interact with something within a radius of about 4 cm and provides a wireless
connection between your device and another. This allows you quickly share various files
with other mobile devices, make payments via services like Google Pay
How to Transfer
Data

Connection methods support the

transferring of data.
We are specifically looking at
transferring data from a mobile
phone.
Can anyone share an example of
this?
How to Transfer Data
You can transfer data from your mobile phone to
another device in various ways…

It can be transferred wirelessly

It can be ‘airdropped’

You can plug in your phone to a computer

To demonstrate your understanding you must
provide a screenshot to evidence data being
transferred between devices for your assessment.

Personal use only means that the copyright holder is giving free and
unlicensed use of their work, but only for non-commercial and non-
profit uses. You can make your own copies, but you cannot distribute
them.

You can type the Copyright symbol from your keyboard

Copyright
You can’t copy or use copyright material without permission.
It is easy to recognise copyrighted material as the © sign is visible.

For example, you can’t buy a painting and then use copies of it for a book cover, or buy a CD and use a track from
it in a film. To use something protected by copyright you must either:
• agree a licence with the owner to use it
• buy or acquire the copyright
For example, you may have posted a video on Facebook with copyrighted material (music) and seen this sign:
Can you think of another constraints on the use
and transfer of information?

Data Protection (2018) Laws & GDPR require us to

protect personal and financial information.
GDPR set out to give individuals greater control of
their personal data that's held by third-parties, such
as retailers or social networks.
Data Protection (2018)
Personal data is becoming increasingly valuable, and the
collectors and users of data have responsibilities under the act,

Digital devices can have numerous issues, such as:

Memory full – Caused by the overwhelming amount of data stored on the internal memory.
Solved by reducing apps on your device and use them simultaneously gain external memory
(eg, Memory Cards)
Malware – Caused by Viruses, Trojans, spyware, and ransomware are among the different kinds
of malware, Solved by keeping up with updates and using Anti-Virus software
Programmes running slowly – Caused by One of the most common reasons for a slow device
are programs running in the background. Solved by remove or disable any useless background
applications and startup programs that automatically start each time the device boots
