COMBINED
VARIATION
OBJECTIVES
Illustrates situations that involve the following
variations: (c) combined variation;
Solve problems involving combined variation
COMBINED VARIATION
A combination of direct and inverse variation.
The statement “z varies directly as x and
inversely as y” means :

where k ≠ 0, and k is the constant of variation

Translating statement into equation.
Use k as a constant

W varies jointly as c and

square of a and inversely as b

inversely as s

The electrical resistance R of a wire
varies directly as its length l and
inversely as the square of its diameter

Let us solve problems involving joint
variation
1. 𝑟 varies directly as 𝑠 and indirectly as 𝑡. If 𝑠 =
2 and 𝑡 = 4, then 𝑟 = 7. What is the constant of
variation?

Let us solve problems involving joint
variation
2. If x varies directly as y and
inversely as z, and x = 10 when y =
5 and z = 3, find z when x = 3 and y
= 4.
See solution on the board…
Let us solve problems involving joint
variation
3. The number of girls varied directly as the number
of teachers and inversely as the number of boys.
When there were 50 girls, there were 20 teachers and
10 boys. How many boys were there when there were
10 girls and 100 teachers?

See solution on the board…

Let us solve problems involving joint variation
4. The centrifugal force 𝐹 of a body moving in a circle varies
jointly with the radius 𝑟 of the circular path and the body’s
mass 𝑚, and inversely with the square of the time 𝑡 it takes to
move about one full circle. A 6-gram body moving in a circle
with radius 100 centimeters at a rate of 1 revolution every 2
seconds has a centrifugal force of 6,000 dynes. Find the
centrifugal force of an 18-gram body moving in a circle with
radius 100 centimeters at a rate of 1 revolution every 3
seconds?
Is there any question/s in our
topic for today?
Thanks!
