Make a conjecture about the
patterns shown by each list. Then
use the conjecture to give the next
three objects in the pattern .

What are patterns?
Patterns are numbers, shapes or
other object that are arranged
according to a specific rule.

It is a repeated arrangement of
numbers, shapes, colours and so
on.
What is a sequence?

A sequence is a set of numbers or figures which is

written in a special order based on a defined rule.

A sequence is a set of objects which is listed in a

specific order, one after another.
Each member or element in the sequence is
called term.
a 1 , a 2 , a 3 , a 4 , a 5 , a 6, ………, a n
• The number a 1 is called the 1 st term, a 2 is the 2 nd term, and in
general, a n is the nth term. Note that each term of the sequence is
paired with a natural number.
• Given at least the first 3 terms of a sequence, you can easily find
the next term in that sequence by simply discovering a pattern as
to how the 3 rd term is derived from the 2 nd term, and the 2 nd from
the 1 st term.
• You will find that either a constant number is added or subtracted
or multiplied or divided to get the next term or a certain series of
operations is performed to get the next term.
Example: 1, 3, 5, 7, ____, ____, …
a1 = 1 a2 = 3 a3 = 5

a 4 =? a 5 =? a 6 =?

PATTERN/RULE:
Adding 2 from one term to another.
In life, we experience a
sequence of ups and downs.
What should one’s attitude
be towards ups and downs in
life?
