What is Taguchi Method?

 Efficient method for designing process that

operates consistently and optimally over a variety
of conditions.

 A powerful tool for the design of high-quality

systems, provides simple, efficient and
systematic approach to optimize designs for
performance, quality and cost.

 Involves reducing the variation in a process

through robust design of experiments.
Taguchi's Approach to Design of
Experiments (DOE)
 Developed by Dr. Genichi Taguchi to study
the effects of multiple variables
simultaneously.

 Involves using orthogonal arrays to organize

the parameters affecting the process and the
levels at which they should be varies.
Taguchi's Orthogonal Arrays

 Study the entire parameter range with lesser number of

experiments.

 This allows for the collection of the necessary data to determine

which factors most affect product quality with a minimum
amount of experimentation, thus saving time and resources.

 The signal (product quality) to noise (uncontrollable factors) ratio

should be high.

 Example: L9 orthogonal array for conducting experiments with 3

factors at 3 levels.

Taguchi's Robust Design
 A reactor's behavior is dependent upon impeller
model, mixer speed, the control algorithm
employed, and the cooling water valve type. The
possible values for each are as follows:
 Impeller model: A, B, or C
 Mixer speed: 300, 350, or 400 RPM
 Control algorithm: PID, PI, or P
 Valve type: butterfly or globe
 There are 4 parameters, and each one has 3 levels
except for valve type. The highest number of levels
is 3, so we will use a value of 3 when choosing our
orthogonal array.
Taguchi's Robust Design
 Using the array selector above, we find that the appropriate orthogonal array
is L9:
Taguchi's Robust Design

 The appropriate strategy is to fill in the entries for P4=3 with 1 or 2 in a

random, balanced way.
Taguchi's Parameter Design
 To determine the effect each variable has on
the output, the signal-to-noise ratio, or the
SN number, needs to be calculated for each
experiment conducted.

 The calculation of the SN for the first

experiment in the array above is shown for
the case of a specific target value of the
performance characteristic.
Principal Component Analysis (PCA)
 Technique uses mathematical principles to transforms several possibly
correlated variables into a smaller number of variables called principal
components.

 It is a way of identifying patterns in data and expressing the data in such a

way as to highlight their similarities and differences.
Goals of PCA

1. Extract the most important information from the data table.

2. Compress the size of the data set by keeping only this important
information.
3. Simplify the description of the data set.
4. Analyze the structure of the observations and the variables.
5. Compress the data, by reducing the number of dimensions, without much
loss of information.
6. This technique used in image compression.
