Lesson 9 Telescopes

The document discusses different types of telescopes including refracting and reflecting telescopes. It provides details on how telescopes work and examples of large telescopes like the Hubble Space Telescope and Keck Telescopes. It also discusses how telescopes allow us to see farther into space by looking back in time due to the distance light travels.

Lesson 9: Telescopes

Science 9: Space Exploration

Read pages: 435 to 439
Uses either mirrors or lenses
to gather and focus light
What are some cool facts about
telescopes?
• Telescopes range in size from little plastic
tubes to the Hubble Space Telescope
weighing several tons.
• Even small amateur telescopes are
powerful enough to see between 40 million
to ½ billion light years into space.
• Many amateur astronomers have
contributed to our understanding of space
What are some cool facts about
telescopes?
• Telescopes are time machines – when
you look into space, you are looking back
into time!
– For example: the light from a star that is 4
million light years away left that star 4
million years ago. (Remember – 1 light year
is the distance traveled by light in 1 year).
Therefore, you’re seeing the star as it
appeared 4 million years ago!
When was the first telescope made and
used to study space?
The first telescope was made by Hans
1608 and consisted of 2
Lippershey in __________
lenses.
Galileo was the first person to
space use a telescope to
study ____________. He saw 4 moons
heliocentric
orbiting Jupiter, which supported Copernicus’s
_______________ model of the solar
system.
Gather
An optical light has basically 2 jobs:
telescope
Focus light

What are the 2 different types of telescopes?
Refracting Telescopes

- Uses lenses
- Limit in size (max lens 1m in diameter)
Convex vs Concave lens
What are the 2 different types of telescopes?
Reflecting Telescopes
- Uses mirrors
- Largest mirror 6m in diameter
- No limit
- Can be used in combo
How can we increase an optical telescope’s
ability to see distant objects?
Refracting Telescopes

- Increase the focal length

(f) Focal length = the

distance from the
center of the lens to
the principal foci of
the lens
How can we increase an optical telescope’s
ability to see distant objects?
Reflecting Telescopes
- Uses series of mirrors
A technique when you combine 2
or more telescopes to produce a
clearer image

Keck
I & II
Keck Telescopes – Example of
Interferometry
• The two telescopes are on top of
Hawaii’s dormant Mauna Kea volcano and
are the world’s largest optical and
infrared telescopes.
The site is…

• High, clear, calm, and dry with little

dust and few city lights
Keck I and II

• The telescopes are able to probe

the deepest regions of the universe
with unprecedented power and
precision. Their goal is to search
for planets in other solar systems.
• Eg. Hubble Space Telescope (1990) – is
a reflecting telescope that orbits 600
km above Earth and can see very distant
galaxies that cannot be seen from
Earth-based technologies
When using telescopes on Earth, the Earth’s
atmosphere interferes with the viewing ability due to:

1. Moisture (water droplets)

2. Clouds
3. Air pollution
4. Light pollution
