Research Methodology

This document provides an overview of research methodology in engineering. It discusses that engineering research requires both traditional scientific "hard" methods as well as social science "soft" methods. The document outlines an applied research framework and describes various types of engineering research including descriptive vs analytical, applied vs fundamental, and quantitative vs qualitative. Key aspects of engineering research covered include objectives, motivation, and research flow.

Assistant Professor, Department of Materials Engineering
 This course teaches research methods for systems
engineering and related disciplines.

 This field of research needs research methods

combining the traditional scientific methods ("hard")
Introduction and methods from social sciences ("soft").

 This course shows a framework for shaping and

executing applied research, and offers guidelines for
the various steps.
 Determine a topic for the master project
Research  Know how to conduct a research program
Methods  Discuss the results
Course Pre-  Try to formulate the line of reasoning:
problem, goal, envisioned solution, rationale, open
research questions

 Research refers to a careful, well-defined (or
redefined), objective, and systematic method of search
for knowledge, or formulation of a theory that is
driven by inquisitiveness for that which is unknown
What is and useful on a particular aspect so as to make an
research original contribution to expand the existing knowledge
base.
?  Research is a process of creating, or formulating
knowledge that does not yet exist.

knowledge
 Good research involves systematic collection and
analysis of information and is followed by an attempt
to infer a little bit beyond the already known
information in a way that is a significant value addition.
 Usually, engineering research is a journey that
research traverses from a research area, to the topic and finally
onto the problem (Area → Topic → Problem).

 Getting a good problem to solve is more than half

the work done
 Engineering research is the process of developing the
perspectives and seeking improvements in knowledge
and skills to enable the recognition, planning, design,
research and execution of research in a wide range of forms
relevant for engineering and technology investigations
and developments.
 The objective of engineering research is to solve new
and important problems, and since the conclusion at
the end of one’s research outcome has to be new, but
when one starts, the conclusion is unknown.
Objectives
of  The main aim of the research is to apply scientific
Engineering approaches to seek answers to open questions, and
although each research study is particularly suited for a
Research certain approach, in general, the following are different
types of research studies: exploratory or formulative,
descriptive, diagnostic, and hypothesis-testing.
 (i) Studies have shown that intrinsic motivations like
interest, challenge, learning, meaning, purpose, are
linked to strong creative performance;
 (ii) Extrinsic motivating factors like rewards for good

in  (iii) Influences from others like competition,
Engineering collaboration, commitment, and encouragement are
Research also motivating factors in research.
 (iv) Personal motivation in solving unsolved problems,
intellectual joy, service to community, and
respectability are all driving factors.
 (i) Descriptive versus Analytical

correlational methods, and fact-finding inquiries, to

research also includes attempts to determine causes

g Research Analytical research, already available facts for
analysis and critical evaluation are utilized. Some
research studies can be both descriptive and analytical.
 (ii) Applied versus Fundamental
Applied research seeks to solve an immediate
problem facing the organization, whereas fundamental
research is concerned with generalizations and

g Research determine a solution for compelling problems in actual
practice, while basic research is aimed at seeking
information which could have a broad base of
applications in the medium to long term.
 (iii) Quantitative versus Qualitative

qualitative researchers rely on a few nonrepresentative
