Quarter 4 - Week 5

This document provides instruction on histograms and ogives. It defines a histogram as a bar graph that displays frequency per class interval with no gaps between bars. An ogive is defined as a line graph that shows cumulative frequencies, with class boundaries on the x-axis and cumulative totals on the y-axis. Examples of constructing a histogram and interpreting an ogive are provided, along with learning tasks involving analyzing histograms and ogives to answer questions about frequency and cumulative frequency. Rubrics and assessments are included at the end.

QUARTER 4 – WEEK 5

Got a Feeling
https://freeonlinesurveys.com/s/D2lFfgOa
You will learn how to present a data
set that involves measurements that
are not whole numbers.
For instance, based on the
poster at the right, under what
category a typhoon should be
if the following speeds are
given?

1. Typhoon Domeng – 102 kph

2. Typhoon Rosing – 290.4 kph
3. Typhoon Milenyo – 220.1kph
If you find it difficult, we need to explore ways to
identify the category of a given observation. You
will study now a type of bar graph which is the
histogram and a type of line graph which
is the Ogive.
WHAT IS HISTOGRAM?

A histogram is a bar graph that displays the frequency of each

class interval. The properties are:
1. There are no gaps between bars.
2. Bars are adjacent at the class boundaries of the intervals.
3. The class interval involves fractional measurements such as
weights and heights.
Let us construct the histogram of the following data set.
The class adviser already finalized the grades of his grade 7 students. To
present his data, he constructed the frequency
table below.
To construct the histogram,

1. Set the horizontal axis

for the class intervals and
the vertical axis for the
frequency (see
Figure 1)
2. Shade completely
the bars that
correspond to their
frequencies
(see Figure 2).
WHAT IS OGIVE?
An Ogive is a type of line graph that shows cumulative
frequencies. The x-axis has the class boundaries of the class
intervals while the y-axis are the possible partial sums of
frequencies or cumulative frequency.
Using the same data set above, we need to complete the other
details for the Ogive – the class boundaries and the corresponding
cumulative frequency of each interval.
Try to answer the following using
the Ogive at the right.
1. How many students have a grade
of lower than 80?

We select the boundary 79.5 because it is lower

than 80. Based on
the Ogive, the 79.5 has a plot of 14, thus there
are 14 students with
grades lower than 80. We cannot select 84.5
because it is more than 80.
2. How many students have a
grade of AT MOST 90?

We select the boundary 89.5 because we need

grades that are 90
or lower. The plot of 89.5 is 36. Therefore, the
answer is 36 students who
have a grade of at most 90.
LEARNING TASK 1
Based on the histogram of the results of the
exam, answer the
following.
1. In which score interval the most number of
students fall?
2. In which score interval does the least number
of students fall?
3. What score intervals have more than 30
students?
4. What score intervals have less than 10
students?
5. Which score interval has a frequency closest
to 20 students?
LEARNING TASK 2
An interview was conducted to a group of passengers and
they were asked how long it took them to wait for their service
vehicle.
Based on the Ogive at the right, answer the following questions.
1. How many passengers waited for at most 56 minutes?
2. How many passengers waited for at most 78 minutes?
3. How many passengers participated in the interview?
4. For what was the longest possible time that the passengers
waited?
5. How many passengers waited for MORE THAN 89 minutes?

ASSIMILATION
Fill-in the blanks.
1. _________ is a graph that displays the frequencies wherein the
observations have fractional values and the bars are adjacent.
2. ___________is a graph that displays cumulative frequencies per class
interval.
