Pedagogy in Language

Teaching
Francis Kenneth D. Hernandez, CAR-PhD
OBJECTIVES OF THE LECTURE
1. Provide participants an overview of pedagogy
and how it can be applied to language
teaching.
2. Give various strategies that can be
appropriately used in teaching the language.
3. Value appropriate pedagogy as a way to
improve the language learning of learners
Pedagogy – Teaching and
Learning Strategies
• Pedagogy is the art (and science) of teaching.
Effective teachers use an array of teaching strategies
because there is no single, universal approach that suits
all situations. Different strategies used in different
combinations with different groupings of students will
improve learning outcomes. Some strategies are better
suited to teaching certain skills and fields of knowledge
than are others. Some strategies are better suited to
certain student backgrounds, learning styles and abilities.
Continuation
• Effective pedagogy, incorporating an array of teaching
strategies that support intellectual engagement,
connectedness to the wider world, supportive classroom
environments, and recognition of difference, should be
implemented across all key learning and subject areas.
Effective pedagogical practice promotes the wellbeing of
students, teachers and the school community - it improves
students' and teachers' confidence and contributes to their
sense of purpose for being at school; it builds community
confidence in the quality of learning and teaching in the
school.
Why is it important?
Pedagogy is the "how" the teaching and learning
occurs. Students are not empty vessels to be
filled with our expert knowledge. They must
construct their own understandings through our
considered learning experiences.
Do I need variety or do I need
consistency?
The answer is both. Students need to feel safe to
learn effectively. You need variety in order to
reach all the students in the class. Therefore a
wide variety of teaching strategies are essential
in order to develop effective methods of teaching
at the highest level.

Some Strategies that can be
used by the Language
Teacher
• Story telling, songs, role playing, simulations,
demonstrations, cooperative learning, read
alouds, shared reading, independent reading
with leveled texts, learning logs and journals,
interviews, literatures
• Charts, thinking maps, and graphic organizers,
• Use of student-generated problems
Some Strategies that can be
used by the Language
Teacher 2
• Comprehensible inputs will be processed to
result to understandable outputs.
• Language practice can be done through using
visual aids, realia, schema, question and
answer.
• The purpose is to develop proficiency from the
learned language.
Immersion Method
• Identify the vocabulary that students will need to comprehend a lesson
and pre-teach this vocabulary before the lesson.
• Identify both content and language objectives for all lessons.
• Slow down speech when necessary.
• Generate questions that promote higher order thinking but use varying
levels of linguistic complexity depending upon the proficiency level of each
student.
• Provide an environment that is rich in print. This includes word walls,
labels for everyday items, and vocabulary lists that are tied to the content
being studied in class.

Immersion Method
• Provide plenty of high-interest reading materials (fiction and nonfiction) at
various reading levels.
• Make sure the students have free time in which they can use the language of
instruction to talk about their own interests.
• Use plenty of songs. Use commercially produced songs, and have students
compose their own.
• Have students work in cooperative learning groups. Regroup when necessary.
• Assign individual work with clear guidelines and expectations.
• Plan activities that involve Total Physical Response.
• Include role-playing activities not only during the language arts period, but also
in the content areas.
• Use drama and dance in class.
