OF PHOTOGRAPHY IN THE
PHILIPPINES
• From the 1840s to the 1890s, European
and Western photographers were the main
contributors of photography to the
Philippines. It was used for news, travel,
anthropology, social status, historical
documentation, propaganda,
communication, and as a source of
inspiration for engravings and illustrations,
among other things. The method was also
influenced by themes from Western art.

THEIR OWN UNIQUE EYE AND STYLE.
SHAIRA LUNA
Shaira Luna, born in 1986, was born to businessman Bong
Luna and dentistry graduate Jenny Luna. She began
speaking fluently at six months and became
knowledgeable in science, music, and French and Spanish
languages. Luna's parents discovered she had an IQ of a
sixth grader, similar to a high-school student. Jenny Luna
suggested enrolling her in sixth-grade classes at Philippine
Christian University (PCU) to improve her social skills. At
13, she enrolled at De La Salle University to earn a
Bachelor of Science in human biology.

ACHIEVEMENTS
The Luna Awards, given annually by the Film Academy of the
Philippines (FAP), recognize the outstanding achievements of the
Filipino film industry. The awards, originally known as the FAP
Awards, were first presented in 1983 and have since evolved to
include Luna Awards. The name Luna was chosen in 2005 from 221
submissions, and the name is a tribute to Juan Luna, the Roman
goddess of the moon. The awards are named after Luna, a long-
haired woman with a flowing dress representing the muse of arts. The
awards were not given for the 2009 films due to budget constraints,
but are still counted in the numbering pattern.

• A photographer and casting
director from manila, philippines.

• Known for her intimate approach
to menswear and is an advocate
for queer visibility in the creative
industry from casting to
production

HANNAH REYES
MORALES
• August 1, 1990 (age 33 years)
• Morales' work focuses on resiliency and
individual bonds, often documenting
the impoverished and observing their
dignity amidst systemic inequality and
injustice.
• Morales, a National Geographic
Explorer since 2017, has been
recognized as a cultural leader by the
World Economic Forum in 2020.
A photographer from Asia has
documented the daily lives of struggling
communities, including Cambodian
bride trades and forced marriages. She
also documented the Philippine drug
war and its effects, focusing on the
stories of the affected families. Her
work explores resilience within
communities and has evolved beyond
journalism, co-founding the Emerging
Islands art residency in La Union,
Philippines in 2021.

• John K. Chua is best known as an advertising and
commercial photographer, with over 40 years of
experience in this field and numerous local and
international awards for his work. At the same
time, he has applied his photo artistry to
showcasing the beauty of the Philippines.
• An advertising and commercial photographer.
• Adphoto is one of his first studios in the country
that uses digital photography.
• Founded the foundation called Photography with a
Difference. (PWD) that gives free workshops to
children with special needs
THE BEAUTIFUL
ACHIEVEMENTS
Architectural, talent, advertising and commercial
photographer extraordinaire, John is best known for his
technical excellence and mastery of notoriously
challenging photo shoots – to the delight of clients who
envision the seemingly impossible. With more than forty
years of experience under his belt, John has moved with
ease from one genre of photography to another, earning
numerous awards along the way.
GEORGE TAPAN
• If there’s one photographer known to
really “Love The Philippines,” it’s George
Tapan. For five decades now, he has been
helping to promote the country through his
photographs that appear in DOT
campaigns, travel marts, and airport
terminals.
• He brought honor to his homeland by
winning two Pacific Asia Tourism
Association (PATA) Gold awards, an
ASEAN Tourism Association award, and a
win at the 2011 National Geographic
Photography competition. The man has
published over ten books on Philippine
tourism and culture. At 74, he still churns
out some of the most magnificent images
spotlighting different parts of the
Philippines. And that’s why he’s still
considered the country’s master travel
photographer.
INTO THE GREEN ZONE
ACHIEVEMENTS

George has won two Pacific Asia Tourism Association


(PATA) Gold awards, an ASEAN Tourism Association
award and first place in the 2011 National Geographic
Photo Contest. He has worked for the Department of
Tourism and Philippine Airlines and has published 5 travel
photography books.
