Congruent Angles, Vertical Angles, and Linear Pairs

The document discusses different types of angle relationships: - Congruent angles have the same measure - An angle bisector divides an angle into two congruent parts - Adjacent angles share a common vertex and side - A linear pair consists of two adjacent, supplementary angles - Vertical angles are nonadjacent but have the same measure because they are formed by two intersecting lines The document provides examples and practice problems involving identifying and calculating angle measures using these relationships.

Congruent Angles, Vertical

Angles, and Linear Pairs

In the previous lessons, you learned how to classify angles based on their measures. This
time, you will discover how one angle is related to another depending on their
orientation.
For instance, when two angles have the same
measure, they are called congruent angles. In
the figure on the right, the angles formed by
the clock shows two congruent angles.
The angle formed by the hour hand and the
second hand has the same measure as the
angle formed by the minute hand and the
second hand.
In this lesson, you will learn the different relationships of angles using measurements,
such as congruent angles, vertical angles, and linear pairs.
● How are angles related in terms of measurement?

● If vertical angles are congruent, can adjacent angles also

be congruent?
CONGRUENT ANGLES
These are two angles that have the same measure.

Example:
If then
ANGLE BISECTOR
It is a line that divides the angle into two congruent parts .

Example:
is an angle bisector.
Thus,
ADJACENT ANGLES
These are two angles that have the same vertex and a common
side between them.

Example:
are adjacent angles.
LINEAR PAIR
These are two angles formed that are adjacent and
supplementary.

Example:
form a linear pair.
VERTICAL ANGLES
These are nonadjacent angles that are formed by the
intersection of two lines. These angles are equal in measure.

Example:
and are vertical angles.

Example 1: Find the values of and in the figure below.

Solution
Notice that and form a linear pair.
Thus, their sum is .

Solution
Moreover, and are vertical angles.
Thus, they have equal measures.

Also note that and are vertical angles

and they are also equal.

Patrick is riding a Ferris Wheel at a local park. The
Ferris Wheel has 12 coaches, where Patrick is in
number 1. If his coach makes from the ground, which
coach makes the same angle to the top? (Note that
Ferris wheels travel clockwise.)

adjacent and supplementary angles.
