Basic Concept of Assessment

Assessment of learning refers to systematically evaluating student understanding, knowledge, and skills in a subject area. The goal is to measure what students have learned and assign grades. Measurement is the actual collection of information on student learning using tools like tests, observations, or questionnaires. Evaluation involves making judgements about students' performance and the effectiveness of teaching based on the measured data. Together, measurement, assessment, and evaluation form a process to gather information on student learning and make decisions to improve instruction.

BASIC CONCEPT IN

ASSESMENT OF
LEARNING 1
Here starts the
lesson!
OBJECTIVES:
A. Differentiate measurement, assessment, and evaluation
B. Discuss the characteristics of the different concepts in
assessment of learning
C. Explain the benefits of assessment of learning
What is
Assessment of
Learning?
Assessment of Learning

Assessment of Learning is a systematic

process used to evaluate students
understanding, knowledge, and skills in
aparticular subject.
The Goal is to measure whats students
have learned and to assign grades or
scores based on their performance.
What is • It refers to the actual collection of
information on student learning through
Measurement? the use of various strategies and tools.
• Measurement is the process of making
empirical observations of some
attribute, characteristic, or
phenomenon and translating those
observations into quantifiable or
categorical form according to clearly
specified procedures of rule.
Methods of Data
Collection
• Paper and Pencil
Collection of Data through self reports,
interview, questionaire, test, or other
instruments.
2. Systematic
Observation Researcher looks for
specific actions or
activities,but is not
involved in the actions
being observed.
3. Participant
Observation Researcher is actively
involed in the process
of being described and
writes observations at
later time.
4. Clinical

Evaluation
What is
Evaluation?
Refers to the actual of making decision or

judgements about the correctness of
the strategy and particularly about the
outcomes.
The Purpose of Evaluation
• To make reliable decision about educational planning
• To help teachers determine the effectiveness of their
teaching techniques and learning materials.
• To help Motivate Students
• To identify problems
• To predict the general trend in the development of the
teaching learning process
ASSESSMENT
What is Assessment ?

Rooted in the latin word "assidre"

which means "to sit beside the
others. Its generally defined as the
process of gathering quantitative
and/or qualitative data for the
purpose of making decisions.
In assessment of learning, the following
are important:
• Feedback provides quality control over the design and delivery of
activities.
• Control relates training policy and practice to organizational
goals (productivity, and cost benifits activity.
• Research is to add to knowledge of training principles to improve
techniques.
• Intervention is the process of using evaluation to affect the way
the program being evaluated is viewed.
• Power is to use evaluation information for a political agenda.
Different Types of
Assessment in Learning
Formative Assessment
Refers to assessment activities that provide
information to both teachers and learners on how they
can improve teaching learning process. This is
formative because, it is used at the beginning and
during instruction for teachers to assess learners
understanding
Summative Assessment
An assessment activities that aim to determine
learners mastery of content or attainment of
learning outcomes. They are summative as they
are supposed to provide information on the
quantity and quality of what students have learned
or achieved at the end of instruction.
Diagnostic Assessment
Aims to detect the learning problems or difficulties
of the learners so that the corrective measure or
intervention are done to ensure learners.
Placement Assessment
Usually done at the beginning of the school yearto
determine what learners already know or what are
their needs that could inform design of instruction.
Traditional Assessment
Refers to the use of conventional strategies or
tools to provide information about the learning of
students.
Auntentic Assessment
Refers to the use of assessment strategies or tools
that allow learners to perform or create a product
that are meaningful to the learners, as they are
based on real world.
Principles in Assessing Learning
• Assessment should have a clear purpose.
• Assessment is not an end in itself.
• Assessment is an ongoing, continuous and formative process.
• Assessment is learner centered.
• Assessment is both process and product oriented.
• Assessment must be comprehensiveand holistic.
• Assessment requires the use of appropriate measures.
• Assessment should be aunthentic as possible.
Examples of Measurement, assessment and
evaluation

• Measurement (Scoring)
• Assessment (Grading)
• Evaluation (Passing/Failing)
