Tutorial 1
Example 1
The applied bias voltage of a diode is 0.5 V at operating temperature of 20°C. The
reverse saturation current (Is) of the diode is 40 nA, if the ideality factor of the
diode n = 2, calculate the following
(a) Thermal voltage of the diode (Assume Boltzmann’s constant k is 1.38 x10-23 J/K)
(b) Diode current
Example 2
For a diode current of 8 mA and n = 1, find Is if the applied voltage is 0.5 V and the
temperature is room temperature (25°C).
Example 3
(a) Determine the diode current at 20°C for a silicon diode with n = 2, Is = 0.1 µA at
a reverse-bias potential of -10 V.
(b) Is the result expected? Why?
Example 4
1. Determine the static or dc resistance of the
commercially available diode of Fig. at a forward
current of (a) 4 mA (b) 10 mA
2. Determine the static or dc resistance of the
commercially available diode of Fig. at a reverse
voltage of (a) -10 V. (b) How does it compare to the
value determined at a reverse voltage of -30 V?
Example 5
• Determine the DC and dynamic (ac) resistance of the
commercially available diode of Fig. at a forward
current of 10 mA. Compare their magnitudes.
Example 6
• Determine the average ac resistance for the diode of
Fig. for the region between 0.6 V and 0.9 V.
