Normal Distribution

The document discusses normal random variables which follow a normal distribution with a mean of 0 and standard deviation of 1, it provides examples of calculating z-scores from given means, standard deviations and data points, and includes an activity with additional examples of determining z-scores.

NORMAL

RANDOM
VARIABLE
OBJECTIVE
S:
• Illustrates a normal random
variable and its characteristics.
• Construct a normal curve.
• Identifies regions under the normal
curve corresponding to different
standard normal values.
What is normal random
variable?
It is normally distributed
random variable with mean
equal to zero (x̄ = 0) and
standard deviation equal to
one (σ = 1).
What is normal random
variable?
A continuous variable X
having the symmetrical,
bell shaped distribution is
called a Normal Random
Variable
What is normal random
variable?
The normal probability distribution
(Gaussian Distribution) is a
continuous distribution which is
regarded by many as the most
significant probability distribution in
statistics particularly in the field of
statistical inference.
What is normal random
variable?

It will always be
denoted by the
letter Z.
Symbol
used
“Z”
Symbolized for z-score or the
standard score. Standard normal
distribution or simply standard
distribution and the individual
values are called standard scores
or the z-scores.
“μ or x̄”

It is the Greek letter

“mu” which symbolize
for mean.
“σ”

It is the Greek letter

“sigma” which
symbolize for
Standard Deviation.
Characteristics
of Normal
Distribution
1. It is bell-shaped and
has a single peak at
the center of the
distribution.
2. The arithmetic
mean, median and
mode are equal.
3. The total area under the
curve is 1.00; half the area
under the normal curve is to
the right of its center point
and the other half to the left
of it.
4. It is
Symmetrical about
the mean.
5. It is Asymptomatic: the curve
gets closer and closer to the X-
axis but never actually touches it.
To put it another way, the tails of
the curve extend indefinitely in
both directions.
6. The location of a normal
distribution is determined by
the Mean, the dispersion or
spread of the distribution is
determined by the Standard
Deviation.

Examples
Example 1

The test scores of students in a

class test has a mean of 70 and
with a standard deviation of 12.
what is the probable percentage
of students scored more than 85?
Solution
z=

z=

z = 1.25
From the z-score table, the
fraction of the data within
this score is 0.8944.
This means 89.44% of the
students are within the test
scores of 85 and hence the
percentage of students who
are above the test scores of
85 = (100 – 89.44)% = 10.56%.
Example 2

A large group of test scores is

normally distributed with mean
78.2 and standard deviation 4.3.
what percent of the students
scored 85?
Solution
z=

z=

z = 1.58
From the z-score table, the
fraction of the data within
this score is 0.9429.
This means 94.29% of the
students are within the test
scores of 85 and hence the
percentage of students who
are above the test scores of
85 = (100 – 94.29)% = 5.71%.
Activity
Activity

On a statistics exam, the mean

score was 80 and there was a
standard deviation of 7. If a
student’s actual score of 92, what
is his/her z-score?
Activity

The mean grade on a science test

was 79 and there was a standard
deviation of 6. If your sister
scored an 88, what is her z-
score?
Activity

In a normal distribution, if the

mean score is 8 in a gymnastics
competition and the students
scores a 9.3, what is the z-score if
the standard deviation is 2.5?
