Sulfate Analysis Spectrophotometry Method - English Report Text

The document is a lab report analyzing sulfate levels in tap water using spectrophotometry. [1] High levels of sulfate can harm human health, so the report analyzes a water sample to determine its sulfate concentration. [2] Using a spectrophotometer and the Lambert-Beer law, a standard curve is generated to quantify sulfate levels. [3] The results found the water sample's sulfate concentration to be 20.4758 mg/L, below the maximum level of 400 mg/L set by regulations.

INTRODUCTION
Water is one of the most important thing for every living creatures on
earth. Water contains a lot of minerals and any other substances such as
sulfate.

Sulfate can be found on our environment and usually on its liquid form.
Chemical industrial and mine drainage wastes may discharge large
amounts of sulfate into watercourses, increasing its natural level to
several thousands of milligrams per liter.

High level of sulfate can cause damage to human’s health. In order to

know the quality of water, a check of the water is needed. One of the
most common used method to analyze sulfate level is spectrophotometry
method. According to Government Regulations No. 82 Year 2008, the
maximum amount of sulfate in water for hygiene needs is 400 mg/L.
LITERATURE REVIEW
Water is a chemical compound formed by a bound of two element of hydrogen and one
element of oxygen. Water is a useful important compound. Not all of water is good to be
used because water may contain a lot of substances without any change of physique.

Sulfate is a polyatomic ion. Sulfate is widely distributed in various natural environments

and plays an important role in biogeochemical cycles. Dissolved sulfate in water
environment is primarily derived from natural and anthropogenic sources. High sulfate
concentration can cause diseases and also places some constraints on industrial water
and irrigation water.

Spectrophotometry is a method to measure the concentration of a

substance by how it absorbs light by measuring the intensity of light
that passes through sample solution using an instrument called
spectrophotometer. Spectrophotometry work by the Lambert-Beer
Law.

CONCLUSION

Sulfate concentration in the tap water sample is

20,4758 mg/L.
