+ OBE Addresses Key
Questions...
 Who are our stakeholders?
 What services do we provide?
 What services, facilities and policies must be present?
 How do we measure our results?
 How do we use these results for CQI?
 Are we achieving our objectives and improving?
 Are our stakeholders satisfied?
+ Strategies to Implement OBE… 5

Course Content - Reviewing course content to suit specified Learning

Outcomes, industrial needs, job specifications, professional body
requirement (accreditation), etc.

Teaching-Learning Methods - Introducing innovative/flexible teaching

methods/delivery tools to develop PEO and PO in
students/graduates.

Assessment & Evaluation Tools - Introducing variety of assessment

and evaluation tools to measure the achievement of PEO and PO.

Data & Evidence Collection - Collecting evidences of process

Improvement and the achievement of the PEO and PO.

Working towards Continuous Quality Improvement

+ Characteristics of OBE curricula 6

 Ithas program educational objectives (PEO), program

outcomes (PO), course outcomes (CO) and
performance indicators (PI) through assessments
 Itis objective and outcome driven, where every stated
objective and outcomes can be assessed and
evaluated.
 Itis centered around the needs of the students and the
stakeholders.

 CQI procedures
+ Role of Teachers
8

Review PEOs, POs, Course Structures and Syllabi.

• Teach the relevant engineering, maths and other
relevant subjects.
• Conduct relevant tutorials and laboratory practical
sessions.
• Give appropriate guide on assignments and projects.
• Conduct empirical measurements of POs.
• Prepare the required documentation.
• Ensure Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI).
+ Role of Students
9

 Know the required POs and PEOs

• For each course, review the Learning Outcomes at the beginning
of each semester. This gives an idea of the knowledge and skills
expected from a particular course.
• Be more proactive in the learning process to acquire the Learning
Outcomes of subjects.
• Demonstrate through the assessment methods that the required
skills and knowledge have been acquired.
• Attain the PO and PEOs as a whole during the entire programme.
• Give constructive feedbacks on the programme/course/academic
staff.

OUTCOME BASED EDUCATION

 What can you do now that you have obtained your

degree?” instead of
"what courses did you study to obtain your degree?”;

 OBE focuses on what the students are able to do at

the end of each course and at the end of the program.

5 Questions for Instructional Design

1. What do you want the student to be able to do?

(Outcome)
2. What does the student need to know in order to do this
well? (Curriculum)
3. What activity will facilitate the learning? (Pedagogy -
learning & teaching)
4. How will the student demonstrate the learning?
(Assessment)
5. How will the teacher know the student has done this
well? (Criteria)

+ CURRICULUM AND CO FRAMING

1. Identify all of the content, skills, behaviors and

thinking processes that you want the students to
learn.
2. Refine the list to include only those areas that are
most important (Competencies , skills, theoretical
knowledge, behaviors etc… )
3. For each competency identify the level
competency you want them have .You can use
Bloom taxonomy here to identify competency
level
4. Identify how they will show the competency ( this
will be helpful when you come to the
Assessment).

Repeat 1-4 to write COs 1

+ COURSE OBJECTIVES & COURSE 14

OUTCOMES

 A program consists of number of theory, practical and

project courses.
 Each Course shall have a set of Course Objectives,
which describe what the teacher intends to teach and
are written from the teacher’s point of view.
 Course Outcomes are comprehensive sets of
statements of exactly what the students will be able to
do/achieve after the successful learning.
 Course Objectives and Course Outcomes are to be
framed by each teacher, at the beginning of the course.
+ COURSE OUTCOMES
15

 Course Outcomes (COs) are clear statements of what a

student should be able to demonstrate upon
completion of a course.
 knowledge, skills, abilities or attitudes that students
attain by the end of the course.
 They should be assessable and measurable
 It is generally a good idea to identify five to six
outcomes.

+ CASE STUDY DIGITAL ELECTRONICS

At the end of the course students will be able to:

• Use digital electronics in the present contemporary world
• Design various combinational digital circuits using logic gates
• Do the analysis and design procedures for synchronous and
asynchronous sequential circuits Use the semiconductor
memories and related technology
• Use electronic circuits involved in the design of logic gates

1. There is no mapping for PO6,PO7,PO8,PO11

2. There is low mapping for PO3,PO9,PO10,PO12

CO & PO Assessments

 Course Outcome Assessment process:

 The CO assessment for each course is done by

individual faculty member and assessed by the
Academic Coordinator at the end of the semester. The
assessment process has two following methods:

 Direct Assessment Method

 Indirect Assessment Method
+ CO/PO ASSESMENT
Direct Assessment Method
Evaluation Procedure:

Theory Courses

Direct Assessment Method: Internal Assessment:

Class average for each test, assignments, seminars, Project review &
attendance may be calculated (As per the requirement of selected
assesment tools of the institutions) and target for attainment level is set
based on the class average:

The attainment level and target levels of each course may be fixed as
follows:

Attainment Level = 1, if 60% of students secured more than 50% Marks

Attainment Level = 2, if 70% of students secured more than 50% Marks

Attainment Level = 3, if 80% of students secured more than 50% Marks

+ CO/PO ASSESMENT
Direct Assessment Method
Direct Assessment Method: University Exams:
The attainment level and target levels of each course are fixed as
follows:
Attainment Level = 1, if 40% of students secured more than E Grade
Attainment Level = 2, if 50% of students secured more than E Grade
Attainment Level = 3, if 60% of students secured more than E Grade
Overall CO attainment:
Attainment Level through Direct Assessment=
(0.80x Attainment level based on University Exams
Examination marks) +(0.20 x Attainment level based on Internal
marks)
