2. Controls the flow of electricity from the source ( On/OFF).
3. The pathway of electricity from the source to the load.
4. A device that uses electricity from the source.
Observe the picture below:

What can you say about the picture?

Examine the picture below:

What are the different parts of the simple

electromagnet?
All magnets belong to a group of
metals called the ferromagnetic
metals. These are metals such as
nickel and iron. Each of these metals
have the special property of being able
to be magnetized uniformly.
It can attract objects such as pins, coins, and
other materials made up of iron and steel. A
nail is not a magnet, but it can be turned into
one. This is done by coiling a wire around it
and then letting electricity flow through it.
Doing this turns the nail into an
electromagnet.
An electromagnet attracts like a real magnet. It can
attract materials made of metals like pins and
thumbtacks. The iron nail acts as magnet while
electricity from the battery is flowing through the
coil of wire. When electricity stops flowing through
the coil to the nail it can no longer attract the pin
and thumbtacks. Electromagnets are temporary
magnets.
The Parts of an Electromagnet
A basic electromagnet has three main
parts: an iron core, insulated wire and a
power sources.
1. Iron core. Its purpose is to concentrate
the magnetic flux produced by the current
in the area outside the wires.
2. Wire/ Insulated wire. The wire serves as the
passage of the electric current creating a magnetic
field. The number of turns of wire represents the
power of the electromagnet. The cable and wires
need to be insulated as it prevents the current from
coming into contact with other conductors. It
preserves the wire material against environmental
threats and resists electrical leakage.
3. Power source. It serves as the
source of electricity that flows to the
wire to create a magnetic field. The
amount of current also affects the
strength of the electromagnet.
Directions: Fill in the boxes with the materials that make up an
electromagnet. Choose your answer form the words inside the
box.
What materials that uses
electromagnets?
Using electromagnets, you can create all sorts
of things, including motors, solenoids, hard
disks and tape drives, speakers, and many
others.
Electromagnets have many uses.
1. It is used to transmit signals, as in the
telegraph, telephone, radio, and television.
2. It is also used for industrial purposes, such as in
motors, generators, and transformers.
3. The electromagnet in a crane is used to lift heavy
objects like metals, steel bars, scrap iron, and cars.
4. Electromagnets are used in bells, buzzers,
chimes, circuit breakers, and other electrical
appliances in our homes.
5. Electromagnets run electric toys.
REMEMBER THESE:

 An electromagnet attracts like a real magnet but it

is a temporary magnet.
 The iron nail acts as magnet while electricity
from the battery is flowing through the coil of wire.
 When electricity stops flowing through the coil to
the nail it can no longer attract the pin and
thumbtacks.
 An electromagnet can be made
stronger by using more coils of wire.
 The number of battery or dry cell also
affects the strength of an electromagnet.
 Electromagnets are used in our home
appliances and gadgets.
Directions: Write TRUE if the statement
describes an electromagnet and FALSE if not
__________1. Electromagnets are temporary
magnets.
___________2. Electromagnet attracts the pins
and thumbtacks when electricity STOPS
flowing from the battery through the coil to the
nail.
___________3. Electromagnet is made of
battery, coiled wire and nail.
___________4. Electromagnet can be made

REVIEW: Directions: Fill in the boxes with the materials that

Look at the following materials and name them.
Can we make a simple
electromagnet using the
following?
Electricity can be used to produce magnet.
This kind of magnet is called electromagnet.
Iron nail with coiled wire will not produce
magnet. The electricity from the battery used,
flows through the coiled and made the metal
and other magnetic materials to be attracted
to the iron nail.
The electromagnet uses the
magnetic effect of an electric
current. A wire carrying current
produces a magnetic field in the
region around the wire.

Observe the picture below:

What can you say about the picture?

It is said that an electromagnet is
temporary and is called an artificial
magnet. It is a magnet that is only
magnetic when an electric current is
flowing through it. If the flow of the
current is cut off, the property of
magnetism stops.
An electromagnet is a type of magnet that
produces its magnetic field with the help of
an electric current. It attracts materials made
of metal. In constructing a simple
electromagnet, you need the following
materials such as iron nail, copper wire and a
dry cell or battery.
Observe the three pictures below

picture C. After carefully

your observation in the chart.

You were tasked to make a
strong electromagnet by your
teacher in Science.

What would you do to make your

electromagnet set-up stronger?
Let’s Remember This

You can increase the strength of the

magnet by increasing the number of coils.
For example, if you double the number of
coils, you double the strength of the
inductive field.
DIRECTIONS : Write the T if the statement is correct
and F if the statement is false.
_________1. To increase the strength of an
electromagnet, add more turns of the wire around an
iron nail.

________ 2. In making a simple electromagnet

consider the number of turns around an iron nail to
make the current flow strong.
_______ 3. The strength of electromagnet
depends on the number of coils of wire wrap
on it.
________ 4. The more loops of wire, the

Is it useful for the

Using electromagnets in lifting
heavy metals will make your
work easily. Big construction
company uses electromagnets to
work fast.
How to make an electromagnet stronger?

An electromagnet can be made stronger by using more coils

of wire. Each turn of wire adds more force to the
electromagnet. The number of battery or dry cell also
affects the strength of an electromagnet. More dry cells
mean more electrons flowing in the electromagnet and,
therefore, stronger magnetism is produced. The size of the
iron core also matters. The greater the size of the iron core,
the stronger magnetism has.
