UN - SDG (United Nations’ Sustainable Goals)
The Sustainable Development Goals or Global
Goals are a collection of 17 interlinked global
goals designed to be a "shared blueprint for
peace and prosperity for people and the planet,
now and into the future". The SDGs were set up
in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly
and are intended to be achieved by 2030.
Objectives: At the end of the lesson the students
should be able to:
- define environmental ethics
-discuss the different philosophical approches to
environmental ethics;
-analyze the 3 environmental attitudes or approaches and
apply to everyday life;
-Create an Artwork showing your idea on how to Conserve
our Environment
What is Environmental Ethics?
- Is a branch of Philosophy that
seeks to define what is right and
what is wrong
- This can help us understand what
actions are wrong and why they
are wrong
- This can be very complicated.
ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS
In these environmentally conscious times, most
people agree that we need to be environmentally
responsible.
What is the goal of environmental ethics?
- Is not simply to convince us that we should be
concerned about the environment, instead it focuses
on the moral foundation of environmental
responsibility and how far this responsibility extends
Ethical Issues
Ethical issues that are dealing with the
environment are especially complex because
sometimes it appears what is good for people
conflicts with what is good for the environment.
Example : putting up of dams
subdivisions and golf course
converting forest into farms
Philosophical Approaches to
Environmental Ethics
1. ANTHROPOCENTRISM
Anthropocentrism

- Human centered environmental ethics.


- All environmental responsibility is derived from
human interests alone
- Only human beings are morally significant and
have direct moral standing.
Anthropocentrism
- The value of the environment lies in its
instrumental worth for human manipulation.
- Our environmental duties are derived both
from the immediate benefit of the people
receive from the environment and from the
benefit that future generations of people will
receive.
Genesis 1:26-31

● And God said, Let us make man in our


image, after our likeness: and let them have
dominion over the fish of the sea, and over
the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and
over all the earth, and over every creeping
thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Man took the word of God literally:
● In the first of the two creation stories in Genesis
(Genesis 1:1-2:3), God gives man dominion over his
creation (Genesis 1:26,28). For many people of faith,
these verses have justified a mastery-over-nature
orientation: dominion is seen as the right to dominate
and to possess absolute control over the entire earth.
Man took the word of God literally:
● Dominion Means Operating In the Anointing
● “The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, for he has
anointed Me.” – Luke 4:18. Dominion is a God-given
gift to His people that requires His supernatural
Anointing. It belongs to you, but it isn't automatic. It
takes faith, walking in love, and operating in the
anointing.(spiritual)
Biocentrism
- Life centered environmental ethics
- All forms of life have an inherent right to exist
- Some believe that we have greater responsibility to
protect animal species than plant species and a
greater responsibility to protect mammals than
invertebrates.
- Another group of biocentrists take the view that all
living organisms have an exactly equal right to exist.
Biocentrism
Ecocentrism
- Maintains that the environment deserves direct
moral consideration and not consideration that is
merely derived from human or animal interests.
- - Environment itself, is not just the living
organisms that inhabit it, it has moral worth.
Ecocentrism
- Systemic value that a particular ecosystem
possesses as the matrix that makes biological
life possible.
- “Mother Earth” or “Gaia” should have the
same right to life
Aldo Leopold
- Is an ecologist who is one of
the earliest and most well
known spokesperson for
Ecocentrism.
- We need to see ourselves as
members of a community
that also includes the land
and the water.

- He claim that “ a thing is right
when it tends to preserve the
integrity, stability and beauty of the
biotic community. It is wrong when
it tends otherwise. We abuse land
because we regard it as a
commodity belonging to us.
- When we see land as a community
to which we belong we may begin
to use it with love and respect.
What is Environmental Attitude?
It is never easy to act in accordance with one
particular ethic in everything. Ethical commitments
pull in different directions at different times.
Because of these difficulties, it is sometimes easier to
talk in terms of General Attitudes or approaches to the
environment rather than in terms of particular ethics.
What is Environmental Attitude?
Environmental attitudes (EA), a crucial
construct in environmental psychology, are
a psychological tendency expressed by
evaluating the natural environment with
some degree of favour or disfavour.
3 Environmental Attitudes or
Approaches
1. DEVELOPMENT
- The most anthropocentric approach. It assumes that the
human race is and should be the master of nature and that
the Earth and its resources exist solely for our benefit and
pleasure.
- Reinforced by the capitalist work ethic, which dictated that
humans should create value for themselves by putting their
labor into both land and materials in order to convert them
into marketable products.

- Suggests that improvements in
the human condition require
converting ever more of
nature over to human use.
- The approach thinks highly of
human creativity and
imagination and holds that
continual economic growth is
itself a moral ideal for society.

- Nature is sacred whether or
not the resources are scarce
- Philosophers such as Emerson
and Thoreau thought of nature
as a full of divinity.

They believe that nature is
beautiful and restorative and
should be preserved to ensure
that wild places exist for future
humans to hike, camp, fish or
just enjoy some solitude.
3. Conservation
- An approach that tends to strike a balance between
unrestrained development and preservation .
- Anthropocentric in the sense that it is interested in
promoting human well being.
- But conservationists tend to consider a wider range of long
term human goods in their decisions about environmental
management.

- Many hunters are
conservationists, they have both
biocentric and anthropocentric
elements in their thinking.
- Ethically sensitive hunters often
see the value of non human
animal species and put ethical
constraints on the way they hunt
them.

- Even though a hunter tends to
think that the humans interest in
harvesting the meat ultimately
overrides the animal’s interest in
staying alive, he or she believes
that the animal has a place on the
landscape and that the world is a
better place if it contains healthy
population of wild animals.
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
- Is defined as “meeting the needs of current generation
without compromising the ability of future generations to
meet theirs.”
- A middle ground that seeks to promote appropriate
development in order to alleviate poverty while still
preserving the ecological health of the landscape
- Does not focus solely on environmental issues
Sustainable Development
- The United Nations 2005 World Summit Document refers to
the interdependent and mutually reinforcing pillars of
sustainable development.
What is environmental Literacy?

Within this model, five essential


components of environmental literacy
are outlined: Awareness, Knowledge,
Attitudes, Skills, and Action
● ASSIGNMENT :
● An environmental organization is an organization coming
out of the conservation or environmental movements
that seeks to protect, analyze or monitor the
environment against misuse or degradation from human
forces.
● You are tasked to create an organization or club
advocating the environment.
● In order to do so, you need to lay out your plans.
● 1. Create an organization's name
● 2. Set specific goals/objectives for the
club/organization ( at least 3)
● 3. Write a description of your club or organization
● 4. Organization's Specific Advocates
● 5. Set at least 3 policies/rules for the members of the
organization - Example : A lover of nature, Must be 18
and above years old etc.)
● 6. Enumerate and describe 2 possible projects (include time frame,
place/venue, type and number of audience or participants for each
project)
● You can use the links below as basis in creating an organization.
● Be able to present this next meeting 4:00 - 7:00 pm .Thank you.

Think as a Conservationist
Create an Artwork showing your idea on how to Conserve our
Environment
Then put a Slogan related to what you have made. Do this in an
oslo paper and color it.
Be sure to take a picture of it and submit it the following week.
