Lesson 1 - Environmental Science - Part 1

This document provides an introduction to an environmental science lesson. It begins with an opening prayer and check of attendance. It then defines key terms related to environmental science, such as environment, environmental science, and ecology. It outlines the various branches of science that contribute to environmental science, including biology, earth science, physics, chemistry, and more. It discusses concepts like interrelatedness, ecosystems, and systems thinking. Finally, it poses questions about why environmental science is important to study and provides examples like understanding human impact and working towards a sustainable future.

A Students Prayer by St Thomas Aquinas
Come, Holy Spirit, Divine Creator, true source of light and
fountain of wisdom! Pour forth your brilliance upon my dense
intellect, dissipate the darkness which covers me, that of sin and
of ignorance. Grant me a penetrating mind to understand, a
retentive memory, method and ease in learning, the lucidity to
comprehend, and abundant grace in expressing myself. Guide
the beginning of my work, direct its progress, and bring it to
successful completion. This I ask through Jesus Christ, true
God and true man, living and reigning with You and the Father,
forever and ever. Amen.

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
Is an interdisciplinary field that includes both
scientific and social aspects of human impact
on the world.
-is the study of the interaction of Earth’s system
and Human system.

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
Is a group of sciences that attempt to explain
how life on earth is sustained, what leads to
environmental problems and how these
problem can be solved.
- Botkin and Keller
-
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
- Refers to the complex of physical, chemical, and
biotic factors (such as climate, soil, and living
things) that act upon an organism or an
ecological community and ultimately determine
its form and survival. - Webster
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE & ECOLOGY
Ecology - a specific branch of environmental
science, focuses on the interaction between
organisms and their environment.

Environmental science- focuses on the

interactions between the environment's physical,
chemical, and biological components.
Environmental
IsScience
a mixture of the traditional science, individual and
societal values, economic factors and political
awareness that are important to solving
environmental problems
It involves an understanding of scientific
principles, economic influences and political
action.
- a decision that may be
supportable from a scientific or
economic point of view may
not be supportable from
political point of view without
any modification.
Task 1 - Environmental Principles
These “nine lenses” are as follows:
● 1. Nature knows best.
● 2. All forms of life are equally important.
● 3. Everything is connected to everything else.
● 4. Everything changes.
● 5. Everything must go somewhere.
● 6. Ours is a finite Earth.
Environmental Principles

7. Nature is beautiful and we are stewards of God's

creation.
8. The amount of life that nature can support is
limited.
9. Human progress must consider its effect on
nature.

INTERRELATEDNESS
- Is a core concept
to Environmental
Science.
- the state of being
mutually related
or connected.
INTERRELATEDNESS
The-high degree of
interrelatedness among
seemingly unrelated
components is a central
factor that makes the
study of Environmental
Science so interesting,
frustrating and
challenging
ECOSYSTEM APPROACH
Is an important approach in dealing with
environmental problems
Environmental Science involves an
understanding that the natural world is
organized into interrelated units called
Ecosystem.
ECOSYSTEM

Is a region in which the organisms and the

physical environment form an interacting unit.

Within this region there is a complex network of

interrelationship.
SYSTE
M
Is a group of interacting, interrelated and
interdependent parts or components that form
a complex and unified whole.
Why does the earth’s environment considered as a
system?
It is composed of several components which
are interacting to shape our current and future
environment.
It is a single system consisting of smaller
interconnected sub systems.
It is an integrated system, but it can be
subdivided into four main
components.
WHAT ARE THE COMPONENTS OF THE EARTH’S
ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEM?

These components are interacting with each other to shape

current and future environment.
WHY DO WE NEED TO STUDY ENVIRONMENTAL
SCIENCE?

As of now human
global
population
reached 7 billion
Can you imagine
Can you imagine if
everything that
we’ve been doing
will be summed up?

1. Due to growing concern

of population increase
As the population of
the world has grown
and the exchange of
people and goods
between countries
has increased, many
environmental
problems have
become globalized in
nature.

UN - SDG (United Nations’ Sustainable Goals)
The Sustainable Development Goals or Global
Goals are a collection of 17 interlinked global
goals designed to be a "shared blueprint for
peace and prosperity for people and the planet,
now and into the future". The SDGs were set up
in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly
and are intended to be achieved by 2030.

CITIZEN’S WATCH
Governments, businesses and other
organizations recognize that
studying environment is vital to
managing a healthy and productive
society
CITIZEN’S WATCH

Thus, the environmental scientists are

often asked to share their research with
the world
However, the observations of
nonscientists are the first step toward
addressing an environmental problem.
