Earth and Life

The document appears to be about a class on Earth and Life Science that discusses genetic engineering and genetically modified organisms. It includes an attendance sheet, class rules, and several sections reviewing the role of genetic engineering in agriculture and medicine as well as examples of genetically modified crops and foods. The class materials provide information on both the potential benefits and risks of genetic engineering for food security, environmental protection, and human health.

Please be attentive during the discussion.

If you have question during the discussion,

please raise your hand to call my attention.
We will have a time for questions and
clarifications at the end of the discussion.

Have fun and keep an open mind.

1. Role of genetic engineering in
agriculture
review
1. Role of genetic engineering in
agriculture
• Genetic engineering helps modify the genes of crops to improve their characteristics.
• It enhances resistance to pests and diseases, reducing the need for pesticides.
• It can make crops more resilient to harsh environmental conditions like drought or
extreme temperatures.
• Genetic engineering also enables the development of crops with better nutritional
content.

medicine
review
2. Role of genetic engineering in
medicine
• Genetic engineering in medicine focuses on manipulating genes to treat or
prevent diseases.
• It plays a crucial role in gene therapy, where faulty genes are replaced or
repaired to treat genetic disorders.
• Insulin and other medical products are produced using genetic engineering
techniques.
• Genetic engineering helps in understanding the genetic basis of diseases,
aiding in the development of targeted treatments.

Are you a BT or Non – BT?
Guide questions:
1. Upon looking at the pictures, can you see any
differences between them?
2. On examining the images, are there
noticeable differences in color, size, or surface?
3. How do the differences you see in the
appearance of corn, eggplant, and rice relate to
the changes made to them through genetic
modifications?
Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) crops are plants genetically
engineered (modified) to contain the endospore (or crystal)
toxins of the bacterium, Bt to be resistant to certain insect pests

Do you think you have eaten one of the GMO products?

And do you think it is safe to eat or use them? Why or why
not?

Analysis
Based on the given activity, do you think our country is
now ready to accept the benefits of GMOs? Do you believe
different sectors will accept GMOs?
FOOD SECURITY
The possible benefits of genetic engineering in food include:
▪ More nutritious food
▪ Tastier food
▪ Disease- and drought-resistant plants that require fewer
environmental resources (such as water and fertilizer)
▪ Less use of pesticides
▪ Increased supply of food with reduced cost and longer shelf life
▪ Faster growing plants and animals
▪ Food with more desirable traits, such as potatoes that produce less
of a cancer-causing substance when fried
▪ Medicinal foods that could be used as vaccines or other medicines
FOOD SECURITY
Some people have expressed concerns about GE foods, such as:
▪ Creating foods that can cause an allergic reaction or that are toxic
▪ Unexpected or harmful genetic changes
▪ Genes moving from one GM plant or animal to another plant or
animal that is not genetically engineered
▪ Foods that are less nutritious
▪ Some people believe it is not ethical to interfere with nature in this
way
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
Some potential risks to the environment include:
▪ Unintended selection
▪ Unwanted change in gene expression
▪ Unintended effect on non-GM weeds, pests, or pathogens
▪ Survival and persistence beyond intended zone
▪ Production of toxic substance to non-target organisms
▪ Horizontal gene transfer
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
Despite the negative myths about GMOs, there are reasons why GMOs are
good to the environment. Some benefits or advantages of GMOs to the
environment include:
▪ Reduced inputs or reduce food waste including reduced pesticides and fuel
needed to operate tractors
▪ Produce more food for a growing world population while reducing impact
on the environment
▪ Conservation tillage reduced Carbo dioxide emissions
▪ Grow more food and less land
▪ Extensive field experience on insect resistant GM crops has shown no
deleterious effects and even believed to be beneficial to bee populations
HUMAN HEALTH
For the safety assessment of GM foods, it generally investigates:
(a) toxicity;
(b) allergenicity;
(c) specific components thought to have toxic properties;
(d) stability of inserted gene;
(e) nutritional effects associated with genetic modification; and
(f) any unintended effects which could result from the gene insertion
1. What developing countries
are using GMOs?
2. Which country has the
highest percentage in the
adoption rates of biotech crop
cultivation?
3. How many countries have
adopted biotech crops since
1996?
WHAT ARE THE ETHICAL ISSUES
SURROUNDING GENE THERAPY?
Because gene therapy involves making changes to the body’s set of basic
instructions, it raises many unique ethical concerns. The ethical questions
surrounding gene therapy include:
▪ How can “good” and “bad” uses of gene therapy be distinguished?
▪ Who decides which traits are normal and which constitute a disability or
disorder?
▪ Will the high costs of gene therapy make it available only to the wealthy?
▪ Could the widespread use of gene therapy make society less accepting of
people who are different?
▪ Should people be allowed to use gene therapy to enhance basic human
traits such as height, intelligence, or athletic ability?
Application

Learners will be grouped into 5. They will assign themselves to the
following roles:
Group 1: Consumer
Group 2: GM Foods Manufacturers
Group 3: Environmentalist
Group 4: Scientist
Group 5: Religious Leaders
