LESSON 2-CHESS

OBJECTIVE:
• Discuss the nature and background of the game Chess.
• Identify the common terms use in playing chess.
CHESS- Brief history
WHO INVENTED THE GAME CHESS?
Legend has it that chess was invented around 200
B. C. by a commander, Hán Xin, who invented the
game as a battle simulator. Soon after winning the
battle, the game was forgotten, but it resurfaced in
the 7th century. For the Chinese, Chess was
invented by the mythical Emperor Shennong and with
his
successor, Huangdi.
CHESS- Brief history
•Long ago, it was considered a game reserved only
for kings and members of the upper classes.
Nowadays, Chess is played by common people.
The modern design of chess pieces bears the
name Staunton, who was an English master in the
mid-1800s. In which these are the type of pieces
that are now used in all tournaments worldwide.
Background of the game
• The first international chess tournament was in London Tourney , played in 1851. A
German named Adolf Anderssen won the game.

• The first Great American-born chess player is Paul Morphy. Morphy travelled to
Europe in the 1850s where he beat all challengers including Adolf Anderssen.
However, the English champion of the time Staunton refused to play with him, so
Morphy never became a world chess champ.

• The 1st official championship chess tournament was played in 1866 in London , a
Jew named Steinitz won the game He became the worlds first official chess
champion, holding this title until 1894.

• THE KING
• THE KING – Is the most important chess piece; however considered as the
weakest. The king only moves one square in any direction- up, down , to the
sides and diagonally. The king may never move himself into a check where he
could be captured.

• THE QUEEN
• THE QUEEN-Is the most powerful piece. It moves in any one straight direction-
forward, backward, sideways, or diagonal. As all the other pieces, except the
knight, it cannot move over any intervening piece.

• THE ROOK
• THE ROOK-May move to any square as far as it wants, but only forward,
backward, and only to the sides. The rocks are particularly powerful pieces when
they are protecting each other and working together.
• THE BISHOP
• THE BISHOP-May move as far as it wants, but only diagonally. Each bishop
starts on one color ( light or dark ) and must always stay on that color.
Bishops work well together because they cover up each others weaknesses.

• THE KNIGHT
• THE KNIGHT-Moves by going two squares in one direction, and then one
more move just like an “L” shape. Knights are the only pieces that can move
over other pieces.

• THE PAWN
• THE PAWN-Moves forward, but captures diagonally. It can never move
backwards. On its first move, then pawn can advance two squares at a time.
Succeeding moves will be one square at a time.
CHESS- terminology
• A list of some of the abbreviations and terms used in chess, with emphasis
on those that might, from time to time, appear in crosswords. The terms
found most frequently are the notation for chess pieces – B, K, N, P, Q and
R.
• This is not intended as a guide to the rules of chess
1. Castling- A simultaneous move (the only one in chess)
whereby a previously unmoved King moves 2 squares
toward an unmoved Rook and the Rook is moved to the
other side of the King.
2. Check- A move which attacks the opposing King.
CHESS- terminology
• 3. Checkmate- A move which attacks the
opposing King, and which the opponent cannot get
out of.
• 4. Chess- a board game fro two players, each
beginning with 16 pieces of 6 kinds that are moved
according to individual rules, with the objective of
checkmating the opposing king.
• 5. Draw – a chess game where nobody ends as a
winner.
CHESS- terminology

• 6. En passantA special method of capturing, only

available to a pawn on its fifth rank.
• 7. Promotion - Promotion is what happens
when a pawn reaches the other side of the
board (that is, the 8th rank) and cannot move
further. Then it becomes any other piece on the
board, except the king. Players usually promote
their pawns to a Queen (called Queening)
