INTERNET
The Internet is a globally connected network system
that facilitates communication and data services
through a vast collection of private, public, business,
academic, and government networks.

The terms internet and World Wide Web (WWW) are


often used as synonyms, but technically they are not
the same thing. The Internet is a global network of
interconnected computers and networks. The World
Wide Web is a service that uses the Internet’s
infrastructure to provide digital devices and
applications with access to websites.
HOW DID THE
INTERNET
DEVELOP?
Internet was born in late 1960's
The first network prototype was called the
ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency
Network). It was one network that connected four
major universities and research institutions.
Historically, it is important because the researchers
used packet-switching to transmit data across the
network in small, manageable units.
BASIC SERVICES OF
INTERNET
• Electronic mail
• FTP
• Telnet
• Usenet news
• The World Wide Web
ELECTRONIC MAIL
• It is also known as e-mail in short.
• It enables to send and receive a
mail (message).
• Image, audio, video can be sent
along with text.
• it is Faster than paper mail.
FILE TRANSFER
PROTOCOL (FTP)
• It enable user to move a file from one
computer to another.
• File may contain:
• Image
• Artwork
• Movie
• Sound
• Software
TELNET
• Telnet services enable users to login to
another computer on internet from their
llocal computer for using:
• Computing power to remote computer.
• Software on remote computer.
• Database of remote computer.
• This action is called ‘remote login”.
USENET NEWS
• Usenet news services enables a group of internet users
to exchange their views, ideas, information on some
common topic of internet.
• A newsgroup is like a large notice board accessible to
all members belonging to the group.
• Social Media like:
• Facebook
• Twitter
• Youtube
THE WORLD
WIDE WEB
• It is a most popular method of accessing internet.
(WWW)
• It uses a concept called hypertext.
• Hypertext documents on internet are known as web
pages.
• Web pages are created by using a special called
Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML)
