Software
What is Software?
Software is a set of instructions, data or programs used to operate
computers and execute specific tasks.
Some well-known computer software examples:
• Operating systems: Microsoft Windows, Linux, macOS etc.
• Productivity Software: Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel,
and PowerPoint etc.
• Internet Browsers: Firefox, Chrome, and Safari etc.

Software is a generic term used to refer to applications, scripts and


programs that run on a device.

It is the opposite of hardware, which describes the physical aspects of a


computer.

⮚Application Software
Example:
System Software
System software is a type of computer program that is designed to
run a computer's hardware and application programs.
• If we think of the computer system as a layered model, the system
software is the interface between the hardware and user
applications.
Examples of System Software
1. Windows 5. Android.
2. Mac OS 6. iOS
3. Chrome OS 7. Blackberry
4. Ubuntu 8. PlayStation
Utility Software
Utility Software performs certain tasks like virus detection,
installation, and uninstallation, data backup, deletion of unwanted
files, etc.
Examples of System Software
1. Antivirus software 2. File management tools
3. Compression tools 4. Disk management tools
Application Software
Application Software is a type of computer program that performs
specific functions. Application Software is also known as end-user
software or productivity software.
• These specific functions performed by application software, can be
personal, business as well as educational.
