Why is the
Philippines always in
the path of a typhoon?
The Philippines is
prone to tropical cyclones
due to its geographical
location which generally
produce heavy rains and
flooding of large areas and
also strong winds which
result in heavy casualties to
human life and destructions
to crops and properties.

B. middle of sea
C. near the land
D. ocean
Answer: D. ocean
How many typhoons enter the
Philippines in a year?
A. 20
B. 25
C. 30
D. 35
Answer: A. 20
According to Philippine
Atmospheric, Geophysical and
Astronomical Services
Administration (PAGASA), an
average of 20 tropical cyclones
enter the Philippine Area of
Responsibility (PAR) every year.
We have to be knowledgeable
and always ready about tropical
cyclones to prevent loss and
damages.
How are typhoons in the
Philippines being named?
Why does the Philippines
have local names for
typhoons?
The state weather
bureau assigns each
Philippine typhoon name
in alphabetical order to
determine the number of
typhoons that have
entered PAR every year.
The first typhoon to enter
in any year starts with A,
the second one starting
with B, and so on.
● PAGASA uses each set of typhoon names in
rotation every four years. For example, the set of
names for 2021 (Auring, Bising, Crising, Dante,
etc.) will also be used in 2025, 2029, and 2033.
● In case all the 25 typhoon names are used within
the year and another storm will enter the country,
PAGASA will use the auxiliary set of names.
PAGASA removes a name from its list if the
typhoon has caused at least 300 deaths or PHP 1 billion
worth of agricultural and infrastructural damage.
According to PAGASA, this practice can help prevent the
trauma from haunting survivors who lost their families
and properties to the typhoons.
Some of the most destructive and deadliest
typhoons in the Philippines whose names were retired
include Yolanda (2013), Pablo (2012), Sendong (2011),
Ondoy (2009), Frank (2008), Milenyo (2006), and Reming
(2006).
● PAGASA also drops Philippine typhoon names that
sound like the those of prominent figures to prevent
public ridicule. In 2015, for instance, the weather
bureau changed Nonoy to Nona because it resembled
the nickname of then President Benigno Aquino III.
Likewise, PAGASA replaced Gloria with Glenda
during former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s
term.

Philippines Severe Tropical Storm Paeng 2022
According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical
Services Administration (PAGASA) on 26 October 2022, a previously identified
Low Pressure Area developed into Tropical Depression (TD) "PAENG". The center
of Tropical Depression “PAENG” was estimated at 965 km East of Eastern Visayas
with a maximum sustained winds of 45 km/h near the center, gustiness of up to 55
km/h.
Together with the trough of STS Paeng, the shearline brought heavy rains over the
country, triggering flooding and rain- induced landslides especially in those areas that were
identified prone to the aforementioned hazards and in localities with significant antecedent
rainfall. Most damages were caused by flash floods and rain-induced landslides especially in
Mindanao.
