Formalist Approach
OBJECTIVES:

1. Explain the principles of formalist


criticism;
2. Critique a selection using the formalist
approach; and
3. Show appreciation of the value of
critiquing a literary piece.
Structure/Form - Scrutinizes the plot
(chronoligical sequence) and the conflict a
story.
- it analyzes the work as a whole, the form
of each individual part of the text from the
individual scenes and chapters, the
characters the settings, the theme, and
devices such as imagery.
FORMALIST APPROACH
A formalist critic examines the form of the work as a
whole, the form of each individual part of the text (the
individual scenes and chapters), the characters, the
settings, the tone, the point of view, the diction, and
all other elements of the text which join to make it a
single text. After analyzing each part, the critic then
describes how they work together to make give
meaning (theme) to the text.

POINT OF VIEW
Point of view is the writer's way of deciding
who is telling the story to whom. Establishing
a clear point of view is important because it
dictates how your reader interprets
characters, events, and other important
details. There are three kinds of point of view:
first person, second person, and third person.
FIRST PERSON POINT OF VIEW
- It uses either of the two pronouns “I”
and “ We”. The narrator is a participant in
the story relating his or her own
experiences directly or an observer.
SECOND PERSON POINT
OF VIEW
- The reader is part of the story.
The narrator describes the
reader’s actions thoughts, and
background using “You”
THIRD PERSON OF POINT OF VIEW
The narrator exists outside the events
of the story, and relates the actions of
the characters by referring to their
names or by the third-person
pronouns he, she, or they.
DIRECTIONS: Identify the correct terminologies of the
