Lesson 1

WHAT IS PLATE TECTONICS?

What is Plate Tectonics?

 Earth’s layer can be described into two:

√ COMPOSITIONAL LAYER
√ MECHANICAL LAYER
CHECKPOINT

Which of the following are the

mechanical layers of the earth?

a. Crust, Mantle, Core

b. Lithosphere, Asthenosphere,
Mesosphere
What is Plate Tectonics?
What is Plate Tectonics?

 Earth’s lithosphere is consist of layers – the

crust and the upper mantle
What is Plate Tectonics?

Why crust and upper mantle? What

characteristics do they have that makes
them part of lithosphere?
What is Plate Tectonics?

 The upper mantle is mostly solid

and brittle
What is Plate Tectonics?

 Crust is the outermost layer of the earth, made of

variety of solid rocks like sedimentary,
metamorphic and igneous

2 KINDS OF CRUST
a. Continental Crust – thicker but less dense
b. Oceanic Crust – thinner but denser
What is Plate Tectonics?

 Continental and Oceanic Crust

CHECKPOINT

It is the outermost layer (compositional)

of the earth.
a. Lithosphere
b. Crust
c. Mantle
d. Asthenosphere
CHECKPOINT

A kind of crust that is thick but less

dense

a. Lithospheric Crust
b. Oceanic Crust
c. Continental Crust
d. Asthenospheric Crust
CHECKPOINT

A kind of crust that is thinner but

denser

a. Lithospheric Crust
b. Oceanic Crust
c. Continental Crust
d. Asthenospheric Crust
CHECKPOINT

It is consist of layers – the crust and the

upper mantle

a. Crust
b. Mantle
c. Lithosphere
d. Asthenosphere
What is Plate Tectonics?
 The entire lithosphere of the earth is broken into numerous
segments called Plates.
 The plate moves very slowly but constantly and this
movement is called Tectonics.
What is Plate Tectonics?

 Plate Tectonics is the theory of moving

lithospheric plates.

CRUSTAL
PLATE EARTHQUAKE
MOVES
What is Plate Tectonics?

 Three (3) Types of Seismic Waves

1. P-Waves
2. S-Waves
- travel in the Earth’s interior
3. L-Waves
- travel on the surface
What is Plate Tectonics?

 The farther the recording instrument is from the

focus, the greater the difference in arrival time of
first P-wave to the first S-wave.
 If we have at least 3 recording stations, that can
tell how far away from them the earthquake
occurred, the epicenter can be determined using
TRIANGULATION METHOD.
CHECKPOINT

Which of the following is the correct

definition of plates?

a. Segments in the lithosphere

b. Slow and constant movement
c. Theory that explains movement
CHECKPOINT

Which of the following is the correct

definition of tectonics?

a. Segments in the lithosphere

b. Slow and constant movement of plates
c. Theory that explains movement of plates
CHECKPOINT

Which of the following seismic waves are used

to determine the earthquake epicenter?

a. P and S wave
b. P and L wave
c. S and L wave
d. P wave only
QUIZ
1-2. Earth’s lithosphere is made up of these two
layers
3. Give one kind of crust and then describe it.
4. What do you call the segments of earth’s
lithosphere
5. What do you call the movements of plates
6. Movement of plates results to ____________.
Study the graph:
7. Where can you find the closest recording instrument?
8. Where can you find the farthest recording instrument?
9-10 Using the graph, can you use triangulation method to locate the epicenter? Yes or
No? Explain your answer.
Let’s wrap it up!

_____I can define plate tectonics

_____I can differentiate continental and
oceanic crust

seismic waves
_____I can explain how triangulation
method is used
