Statistics

Statistics is the collection, analysis, and interpretation of numerical data. It has its origins in state administration but has since developed important applications across many domains. Statistics is important for making informed decisions through understanding patterns in data and assessing information critically. It provides tools for analyzing data and drawing meaningful insights. Statistical methods are techniques for studying data, while statistical data refers to the actual information that is collected and analyzed. Statistics is widely used in business, research, healthcare, social science, education, and more.

Definition of Statistics
Importance and Scope of Statistics
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO STUDY
STATISTIC?
• Informed In Decision-making.
• Everyday Life: People encounter statistics in everyday life, from
opinion polls and consumer reviews to weather forecasts and
economic indicators. Understanding statistics helps individuals
critically assess the information they encounter.
statistics is important because it provides the tools and methods
necessary for making sense of data, drawing meaningful insights, and
making informed decisions across a wide range of disciplines and
applications.
ORIGIN OF STATISTICS
• Statistics, in a sense, is as old as the human society itself. Its
origin can be traced to the old days when it 'was regarded as
the 'science of State-craft' and, was the by-product of the
administrative activity of the State.
• The word 'Statistics' seems to have been'derived from the Latin
word' status' or the Italian word' statista' or the German word'
statistik' each of which means a 'political state'.
DEFINITION OF STATISTICS
• Probability theory, a foundational component of statistics, saw significant developments in
the 17th century. Mathematicians like Blaise Pascal and Pierre de Fermat laid the
groundwork for probability theory, which plays a crucial role in statistical analysis. The 18th
century saw the emergence of actuarial science, which involved the use of statistics to assess
risk in insurance.
• Statistics has been defined differently by different authors from time to time.
*statistical Data
*Statistical Method
STATISTICAL DATA VS
STATISTICAL METHOD
• Statistical Data:

• Statistical data refers to the information or observations that are collected, measured, or
recorded from a specific set of individuals, objects, events, or phenomena.
• Data can take various forms, including numerical values, categorical labels, or even textual
information.
• Statistical data can be collected through surveys, experiments, observations, and other data-
gathering techniques.
• Examples of statistical data include: the ages of a group of people, the scores of students on
a test, the heights of a sample of individuals, or the responses to a questionnaire.
STATISTICAL DATA VS
STATISTICAL METHOD
• Statistical Methods:

• Statistical methods, on the other hand, are the techniques and procedures used to analyze,
interpret, and draw conclusions from statistical data.
• These methods encompass a wide range of tools and approaches designed to uncover
patterns, relationships, and insights within the data.
• Statistical methods include descriptive statistics (measures like mean, median, and standard
deviation), inferential statistics (hypothesis testing, confidence intervals), regression
analysis, analysis of variance, and many others.
• The choice of statistical method depends on the type of data, the research or analysis
objectives, and the questions being addressed.
STATISTICS
• (Vital Statistics): Is by popular usage, any set or mass of quantitative
data such as those found in the records or publications of national
Census, example: quantitative data, births, deaths and marriages.
• Demographic statistics: include figures on population and related data
on health, disease, and other social factors.

IMPORTANCE AND SCOPE OF
STATISTICS
• Business Forecasting: helps men at helm of industries to plan ahead correctly.
• Scientific Research: In scientific research, statistics is essential for designing
experiments, analyzing results, and drawing valid conclusions. It helps researchers
test hypotheses and assess the significance of their findings.
• Quality Control: In manufacturing and production, statistics is used to monitor and
control the quality of products. Statistical process control techniques ensure that
products meet specified standards and minimize defects.
• Business and Economics: Statistics is crucial for businesses to analyze market
trends, customer behavior, and financial data. It is used in market research,
forecasting, risk assessment, and investment analysis.

• Healthcare: In healthcare, statistics is employed for clinical trials, epidemiological

studies, and healthcare management. It helps in assessing the effectiveness of

is used to study human behavior, demographics, and social phenomena. It helps
researchers draw conclusions from survey data and other sources.

• Environmental Studies: Environmental scientists use statistics to analyze data related
to climate change, ecological systems, and environmental impact assessments. It
helps in making informed decisions about environmental policies and conservation
efforts.

• Education: Educational institutions use statistics to assess student performance,

conduct educational research, and make data-driven improvements in teaching and
curriculum development.
