Descriptive Analysis of psychological data

• Descriptive statistics analyze data to help describe, show or

summarize it in a meaningful way.
• Descriptive statistics are used to organize or summarize a set of
data.
• Examples include percentages, measures of central tendency
(mean, median, mode), measures of dispersion (range, standard
deviation, variance), and correlation coefficients.
Raw scores

• A participant’s score on a test before it is converted to other units

or another form or subjected to quantitative or qualitative
analysis.

Mode
Standard deviation
Calculating Mean, Mode, Median and
standard deviation using Excel
2. Graphical Presentation of Data using
Excel
• It is geometrical image of set of data
• Mathematical picture
• Think in visual terms
Basic concepts in graph

1. Ungrouped data- The data in the form of raw scores are known
as ungrouped data
2. Grouped data- when data is organized into frequency distribution
is known as grouped data
Types of graphs

• Bar graph
• Histogram
• Frequency polygon
• Frequency curve
Bar graph

• Data is represented by bars

• Bar diagrams also referred to as bar graph
• Bar graphs are available in two forms
1. Vertical
2. Horizontal
Vertical bar graph
Horizontal bar graph
Histogram
• Histogram or column diagram is a bar graph of frequency
distribution
• Following points should be kept in mind while drawing histogram:
For example
Frequency Polygon

• It is a line graph for the graphical representation of frequency

distribution
• Following points are helpful in constructing frequency polygon
For example
Frequency curve
• Cumulative frequency graph
• Data is organized in the form of frequency distribution may be
graphically represented through cumulative frequency graph
