D3 Chromatography

A famous painting was stolen from a museum in Abu Dhabi. The thief left a mocking note that was written with ink. Black ink is made from mixtures of colored inks that can be separated using chromatography. The police collected ink samples from suspects' pens and will use chromatography to analyze the ink on the note and find the culprit. Chromatography works by dissolving ink mixtures in a solvent, which separates the colored inks as they move up filter paper at different rates. Analyzing the ink on the note using chromatography may reveal the thief's identity by matching their pen ink.

Chromatography

Problem Solving Lesson

The Problem
A famous painting has been stolen from the
Louvre Museum in Abu Dhabi. The thief left a note
at the scene mocking the police and saying that they
plan to strike again!

Without knowing it, the culprit has left a clue in the note… It’s
in the ink!
Black ink is often made from a mixture of other coloured inks.
The inks will dissolve in water and move through filter paper at
different rates, separating out into coloured bands. Each 5 Min
different brand of pen has its own unique fingerprint. We have
managed to take the favourite pens from each of three key
suspects and if we can find the ink that matches the ink used on
the letter, we will find the culprit.

Key Words/Scientific Vocabulary :

Chromatogram: the pattern formed on an adsorbent medium by the layers of

components separated by chromatography.
Capillary action: the process of a liquid flowing in a narrow space without
the assistance of, or even in opposition to, any external forces like gravity.
Mobile phase: The fluid (liquid or gas) that flows through a chromatography
system, moving the materials to be separated at different rates over the
stationary phase.
Stationary phase: The solid or liquid phase of a chromatography system on
which the materials are to be separated or selectively absorbed.
