Introduction
An operating system (OS) is a software program that manages computer
hardware and software resources and provides common services for
computer programs. It acts as an intermediary between the computer
hardware and the application software, allowing the hardware to
communicate and interact with the software.
Functions of an Operating System
An operating system performs various functions, including:
 Process Management: It manages processes, allocates system
resources, and schedules tasks.

 Memory Management: It allocates and manages memory resources,

ensuring efficient memory utilization.

 File System Management: It provides a hierarchical structure for

organizing and accessing files, ensuring data storage and retrieval.

 Device Management: It controls and coordinates peripheral devices,

allowing communication between hardware and software components.
Types of Operating Systems
Operating systems can be classified into the following types
Windows: Developed by Microsoft, Windows is a popular OS known for
its user-friendly interface and widespread compatibility with a wide
range of software and hardware.
macOS: Developed by Apple Inc., macOS is the operating system used in
Macintosh computers, known for its sleek design, stability, and
integration with Apple's ecosystem.
Linux: Linux is an open-source, Unix-like operating system that offers a
high degree of customization, security, and stability. It is widely used in
server environments and as the basis for other operating systems such as
Android.
Unix: Unix is a powerful and stable operating system commonly used in
enterprise-level environments. It serves as the foundation for many other
operating systems, including Linux and macOS.
Recent Developments
In recent years, operating systems have witnessed several
advancements, including:
 Mobile Operating Systems: With the rise of smartphones and
tablets, mobile operating systems such as Android and iOS
have become increasingly prominent, offering specialized
features for mobile devices.

 Cloud Operating Systems: Cloud-based operating systems,

such as Chrome OS, have gained popularity, utilizing web-
based applications and storage, with minimal reliance on local
resources.
Conclusion
Operating systems play a vital role in managing computer
resources and providing a user-friendly interface. Windows,
macOS, Linux, and Unix are some of the prominent
operating systems, each with its own unique features and
target audience. With the constant evolution of technology,
operating systems continue to adapt to new devices and
computing paradigms, ensuring efficient and secure
computing experiences.
