Integumentary System

The document summarizes the key parts and functions of the integumentary system. The integumentary system includes the skin, hair, nails, sweat and oil glands. The skin is the largest organ and has three main layers - the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. It protects the body from outside harm, regulates temperature, and prevents water loss. Maintaining healthy skin through proper hygiene is important for the integumentary system to function properly.

SKIN
PROTECTS YOUR BODY FROM OUTSIDE HARM
AND CONTAINS NERVE CELLS THAT DETECT
CHANGES IN THE ENVIRONMENT.
REGULATES TEMPERATURE
HELPS PREVENT WATER LOSS
ELIMINATE WASTE PRODUCTS
CONT’D
LARGEST ORGAN IN THE BODY
HAS DIFFERENT LAYERS: EPIDERMIS, DERMIS, AND HYPODERMIS
EPIDERMIS
OUTER LAYER OF THE SKIN
PREVENTS WATER LOSS AND PROTECTS THE
BODY FROM UV RAYS
HAS TINY HOLES CALLED: PORES
ALSO CONTAINS MELANOCYTES – skin cells that
produce MELANIN – a substance that gives color to
your skin. It also protects the skin from getting
sunburned.
DERMIS
Middle layer
Contains blood vessels, nerve cells, sweat glands, and sebaceous glands.
BLOOD VESSELS – tiny blood vessels carry the oxygen and nutrients that your
skin need.
NERVE CELLS – send messages to the brain, which tells you how things feel
when you touch them.
SWEAT GLANDS – produces sweat – regulates body temperature and keeps your
body cool
SEBACEOUS GLANDS – produce sebum – keeps the surface lubricated and
waterproof
HAIR FOLLICLES – the end of the hair follicles is a tiny tube with pain receptors
HYPODERMIS
ALSO KNOWN AS “SUBCUTANEOUS
TISSUE”
IT CONTAINS BODY FATS THAT
CUSHION THE MUSCLES AND BONES
FROM DAMAGING IMPACTS AND
INSULATE THE BODY
HAIR
PROTECTS THE SKIN FROM HEAT, DUST,
AND OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
REGULATES BODY TEMPERATURE, AND
FACILITATES EVAPORATION OF
PERSPIRATION
HELPS KEEP US SENSITIVE TO CHANGES
IN OUR SURROUNDINGS
NAIL
PROTECT THE TIPS OF YOUR FINGERS AND TOES
NAIL ROOTS – where nails are formed, found under the skin
NAIL PLATE – hard part that grows out of a nail
CUTICLE – the area where the nail forms and hardens as it
grows
