• Clinical depression lasts for at least 2 weeks and affects the person’s
behaviour and has physical and psychological (emotional and cognitive)
effects.

• Interferes with a person’s ability to work, to have satisfying personal

relationships and generally gets in the way of doing everyday tasks.
DEPRESSION (cont…)
• Depression is a common emotional reaction to a brain injury.

• This could be an early reaction to the trauma of the injury and subsequent disability.

• Develop as struggle painfully and helplessly to regain lost skills- being able to return
to their previous leisure, social activities or fulfil former work aspirations can be
hard to accept and understandably lead to depression.

• Depression can present post brain injury when hospital treatment is complete and
they return home.
SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION
• Lack of energy and tiredness.

• Sad mood that does not go away.

• Loss of enjoyment and interest in activities that used to be enjoyable.

• Not doing everyday tasks, cleaning having showers, getting dressed.

• Difficulty in sleeping or sleeping too much.
