The document provides instructions on calculating the variance and standard deviation of a discrete random variable. It defines variance as a measure of how data points differ from the mean, and standard deviation as a measure of how dispersed the data is in relation to the mean. The document outlines the steps to find the variance and standard deviation of a probability distribution: 1) find the mean, 2) subtract the mean from each value, 3) square the results, 4) multiply by the probabilities, 5) sum the results to get the variance. It then provides two example probability distributions and asks students to calculate the variance and standard deviation.

‘ Variance and Standard Deviation of the
Discrete Random Variable’
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
a. illustrate the probability distribution table of a
Variance and Standard Deviation of the Discrete
random variable;
b. define variance and Standard Deviation of a discrete
random variable; and
c. compute the variance and Standard Deviation of a
discrete random variable.
Variance- is a measure of
how data points differ from
the mean
Standard Deviation- A standard
deviation (or σ) is a measure of how
dispersed the data is in relation to
the mean.
Dispersion – is the state of
getting spread.
Variance and Standard Deviation of a Random Variable-
The Variance and standard deviation are two values that describe
how scattered or spread out the scores are from the mean value of
the random variable. The variance, denoted as, is determined
using the formula:

p (x)

The standard deviation σ is the square root of the variance,

thus,
σ = p (x)
– Variance
µ - mean
σ – standard deviation
p(x) – Probability of the Outcome
Steps in Finding the variance and
Standard Deviation
1. Find the mean of the probability
distribution.

2. Subtract the mean from each value of

the random variable X.

3. Square the result obtained in Step 2.

4. Multiply the results obtained in step 3
by the corresponding probability

5. Get the sum of the results obtained in

Step 4. Results obtained are the value of
the variance of probability distribution.

the standard deviation of the probability
distribution by following the given steps.

distribution for the random variable X representing the
number of heads that occur is given below. Compute the
