SOLVING PROBLEMS

INVOLVING CONVERSION
OF UNITS
(MATHEMATICS)
Probably, everyone in here is accustomed
to certain units of measurements.
Why do we need to learn conversion of
units?

How does it helps us in our daily lives?

CHOCOLATE CHIPS COOKIES
What do you think will happen if your
conversion is wrong?

What will happen to your baked cookies?

We need to be precise and accurate when
doing our conversions.
Activity 1
Group yourselves into two (2) members each.
Instruction:

Measure and record your height and your partner in centimeters (cm). Convert it into feet (ft.)
and inches (in) and into meters (m).

Or if you already know your height in your accustomed unit such as in feet (ft.) and inches
(in), write it down on the table then convert it to meters (m) and centimeter (cm).

Copy the table below in a separate sheet of paper for your answers. Show your solution.

Conversion Factors
1 ft. = 12 inches
1 inch = 2.54 cm
1 m = 100 cm
Question:

What is the height difference between you

and your partner in terms of meters, inches,
and centimeters?
Conversion of units is the conversion
between different units of measurement for
the same quantity, typically through
multiplicative conversion factors.

Conversion Factor is a number used to

change one set of units to another, either by
multiplying or dividing.
The English System which is based on a
non-universal way of measuring by means of
human body parts or other instrument and the
Metric System which is based on a decimal
system.
THE CONVERSION COULD BE:

• Metric System to Metric System

• English System to English System

• English System to Metric System and

Vice Versa.

How to Convert A Unit of Measurement to
Another Unit
1. Compare the two units.

2. Find the conversion factors that gives the appropriate ratio to the given unit.

3. Write the conversion as a fraction, where the denominator is in the same unit as
the given unit.

4. Write a multiplication problem with the original number and the fraction.

5. Cancel out similar units that appears on the numerator and denominator.

6. Solve.
Example no. 1 (Conversion of Length):
Convert 72 Inches to Feet.
1. Compare the two units.

2. Find the conversion factors that gives the appropriate ratio to the given unit.

3. Write the conversion as a fraction, where the denominator is in the same unit
as the given unit.

4. Write a multiplication problem with the original number and the fraction.

5. Cancel out similar units that appears on the numerator and denominator.

6. Solve.
Example no. 2 (Conversion of Mass):
Example no. 3 (Conversion of Area):
Example no. 4 (Conversion of Volume):
Example no. 4 (Conversion of Temperature):
SOLVING PROBLEMS INVOLVING
CONVERSION OF UNITS OF MEASURE

Knowledge of measurement and problem-

solving strategies are necessary in solving
problems. Many problems can be solved
using arithmetic or algebraic processes.
There are problems, however, that can be
solved by simply drawing a diagram.
Example (Word Problem):
Formative Test
Test I: Conversion of Unit

1. 8 mi = _________meter
2. 28.08 quarts =_________gal
3. 325 km² =_________ha
4. 85 °F =_________°C
5. 2.2 lb. =_________grams

Test II. Word Problem

Solve the given word problems below and show all necessary solutions.

6. The oven has a temperature of 150 °F. What is the oven’s temperature on the Celsius scale?

7. The bath tub has a volume capacity of 150 Liters. What is the volume capacity in cubic
inches?
