INTRODUCTION

 Solar energy is rapidly advancing as an important means of

renewable Source of energy.

 In verge of a major energy crisis , as energy consumption is

increasing day by day and energy sources are depleting .

 Solar energy is universally accepted renewable energy for

source , Which can be used to avoid the energy crisis .

 An ecofriendly method of utilizing solar energy for maximum

energy consumption is using the solar tracking system .
OBJECTIVE

 The goal of this project was to develop a prototype of solar

tracking system , which is able to enhance the performance
of photovoltaic modules in a solar energy system .

 The operating principles of device is to keep the photovoltaic

modules constantly aligned with the sun beam , which maximize
the exposure of solar panel to sun radiation . As a result more
more output power can be produced by solar panel.
WHAT IS SOLAR TRACKER

 Solar tracking , a system that positions an object at an angle

relative to sun.

 A solar tracker is a device for orienting a photovoltaic array

solar photovoltaic panel or concentrating solar reflector lens
towards the sun .

 The sun positions in the sky varies both with the seasons
(elevation) and time of day as the sun moves across the sky .

 Solar powered equipment work best when pointed at or near,

the sun so a solar tracker can increase the effectiveness of
such equipment over any fixed position, at cost of additional
system complexity.
NEED OF SOLAR TRACKER

 The most energy is absorbed when a

surface face is perpendicular to the sun .

 Stationary mounted PV panels are only

perpendicular to the sun once a day .

 Improved performance from each panels

means fewer panels are needed.

TYPE OF SOLAR TRACKER
1. Single axis Solar tracker : Single axis solar trackers can either have
horizontal or vertical axis .

2. Dual axis solar tracker : Double axis solar trackers have a both
horizontal and vertical axis .

SOLAR PANEL

 Solar panel is a device that converts light from sun , which is

composed of particles of energy called “photons” , into
electricity that can be used to power electrical loads.

 Main component of solar panel is solar cell which convert sun

energy to usable electrical energy.

 The most common form of solar panels involves crystalline

silicon – type solar cells. These solar cells are formed using
layers of elemental silicon and elements such as phosphorus
and boron .

 The elements added to silicon layers form an N-type layers ,

which has an excess of electrons and a P-type layers, which
has a deficit of electrons. These two layers form a P-N
junction.
ARDUINO UNO

 The Arduino UNO is categorized as a microcontroller that uses the

AT mega 328 as a controller in it .

The Arduino UNO contains a set of analog in digital pins that input and
output pins which are used to connect the board to other component .

There are 14 digital input pins , 6 analog inputs , a USB connection ,

a power jack , an ICSP header and a reset button .It contains all the
necessary modules needed to support the microcontroller.

The Arduino uno board is used for an electronic project and used to
design the circuit .

PHOTORESISTOR
 LDR is a type of resistor that works on photoconductivity principle
means that resistance changes according to intensity of light . Its
resistance decreases with an increases in intensity of light .

 It is made with photosensitive semiconductors material like cadmium

sulphide (cds) , lead sulphide , lead selenide , indium antimonide or
cadmium selenide and they are placed in a Zig Zag Shape.
SERVOMOTOR

 It is an electromechanical devices which convert

digital pulse inputs to incremental shaft rotation.

 The main reason behind using a servomotor is that

provides angular precision i.e it will only rotates
as much we want and then stop and wait for next
signal to take further action .

 Servomotors require a control PWM signal that

represents an output position and applies power
to DC motor until the shaft turns to correct position.

 Servomotor based actuator is used in this prototype .

The role of servomotor in prototype is to rotate the
panel as per the control signals.
SIMULATION OF DUAL AXIS TRACKER DONE ON TINKERCAD
ADVANTAGES

 It is easy to implement since its construction is simple .

 Solar tracking systems continually orient photovoltaic

panels towards the sun and can help maximize your
investment in your PV system .

 High degree of flexibility since it moves in two direction

and higher degree of accuracy in directional point so
utilizing more of solar energy.

 Solar tracker generate more electricity in roughly the

same amount of space needed for fixed –tilt system, making
them ideal for optimizing land usage .

 Tracking system can help reducing emissions and can

contribute against global warming .
DISADVANTAGES

 Initial cost is high as compared to fixed tracking and even

more expensive than single axis tracker system.

 More mechanical complexity of tracking system than fixed

tracking.
