This document provides an overview of Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) and Broadband ISDN (B-ISDN). It discusses that ISDN was developed in 1976 to transmit voice, video, and text over telephone lines. B-ISDN was introduced later to provide higher data transmission rates of 155 Mbps and up using fiber optic cables. The document also describes the different types of ISDN and B-ISDN services including interactive, distributive, conversational, messaging, and retrieval services. It concludes by stating that ISDN can still be a viable solution due to its flexibility and ability to upgrade to higher data rates using new technologies.

INTRODUCTION
 ISDN was developed by ITU-T IN 1976.(International
telecommunication union).

And their idea is to transmit the audio, video and text over the
existing telephone line.

The goal of the ISDN is in form of wide area network that provides
universal-end-to end connectivity over digital media .

 This can be done by Integrating all of the separate transmission

services into one without adding new lines.
EX:= telephone lines , TV cable ,etc.
ISDN
 ISDN stands for Integrated Services Digital Network.

When it was designed at that time the data rate of 64Kbps to 1.544Mbps
were sufficient to handle all existing transmission needs.

 ISDN has ability to deliver at minimum two simultaneous connections, in

any combination of data, voice, video, and fax, over a single line.

 It is a design for a completely digital telecommunications-network..

 It is designed to carry voice, data, images, video, etc.
 The purpose of the ISDN is to provide fully integrated digital service to
users.

B-ISDN
The subject of B-ISDN came into being in the late 1980s,

 To provide for needs of the next generation of technology, an

extension of ISDN, called Broadband ISDN (B-ISDN).
It uses the High band of frequency.

B-ISDN assumes transmission rates of 155 Mbps and up.

 A high-speed telecommunications service which can transmit multimedia

over the phone line.
 It uses fiber-optic cable and is faster than narrowband ISDN
.

 B-ISDN can be used for voice, data, fax, full motion

video, and video conferencing.

Interactive services
The Two-Way Exchange between Either TWO
subscriber or between a subscriber and a service
provider. Chat user’s

Conversational
These are basically real-time communications,
between User's or between a user and a service
provider. (bi-directional)

Such as telephone calls

The R-T services can be used for telephony,
video conferencing, data transfer and so
on.
Messaging
 Messaging Services Are stored and forward exchanges

 This services are Bi-directional (all party can use at a same

time), means one user asking another for information may
have to wait for an answer, even both are available..
 The services includes the Voice mail, Data mail, and
Video mail.
Retrieval
 Used to Retrieve information from a Central Source, called
an Information Center
 Information is sent to the user on demand only , it should
not be distributed unless asked for.

Bi-directional, because it require both requester and

provider for action.
 Services like Libraries, Videotex, Online library.
Distributive Services
 The unidirectional (one-way interaction)
services sent from a service provider to user.
Without User Control With user Control

The Future of ISDN
ISDN can still be considered as a good Solution for several
reason…….

 First :- ISDN can brought to a user with ,minimum cost and the
services.
 Second:- New equipment has appeared on the market that allows a
user to use the entire bandwidth of an ISDN line. Ex. digital pipes
(192Kbps for BRI and 1.544Mbps for PRI)
BRI=Basic Rate Interface
PRI= Primary Rate Interface

This makes it competitive with some other technology

BRI=digital pipes consisting of 2 B channels, and one 16Kbps D channel

 PRI=digital pipes consisting of 23 B channels, and 16Kbps D channel

 (192Kbps for BRI=64(B1)+64(B2)+16(D)+48(overhead)=192Kbps

 ( 1.544Mbps for PRI=64*23(B1-B23)+64(d)+8(overhead)=1.544Mbps.

Third:- The protocol is flexible enough to be upgrade to be higher

data rates using new technology and new transmission media.
