DETERMING THE SLOPE
When written in slope intercept form (y = mx + c), the slope of a line is ‘m’ or the coefficient of x.
E.g. Find the slope of the following lines:
1. y = 3x + 6. 1. m = 3
2. y = 4 – 2x 2. m = -2
3. y = 3. m =
4. m =
4. y =
Y- Intercept
The y intercept tells where the line cuts the y axis.
This is always the point where x = 0!
Ex. 1 Find the y intercept in the line y = x + 3
Let x = 0
y=0+3
y = 3 (y-intercept)

(6, 7)
Example 2 - Find the gradient of the line below.
(1, 4)
Can we find the equation of this line?
What is the slope?
What is the y intercept?
Using the form y = mx + c, what is the
equation of this line?
(3, 2) y = -x + 5
X and Y intercepts
x intercept - the point where the graph crosses the x axis.
Coordinates (a, 0) where a is any point on the x axis.
3x = -6
x = -6/3
x = -2
QUIZIZZ ACTIVITY
Assignment
2. Use the formula to calculate the gradient (slope) of this line. (You
can use any two points)
3. From your graph, determine the y-intercept of this line.
4. State the equation of the line drawn.

DRAW THE GRAPH OF A LINEAR FUNCTIONS GIVEN ONE POINT AND THE
GRADIENT.
QUIZIZZ ACTIVITY
Slope Intercept Form
When written in the form y = mx + c, remember
the following:
1.“m” represents the slope. The slope tells us
how to travel from one point to the next.
2.“c” represents the y intercept. The y intercept
tells us where the graph passes the y axis.
Plotting a Line using A point on the line and the
slope.
1. Plot the first point.
2. Use the “rise over run” method to find 3 – 4 additional points.
3. Connect the points to form your line.
Example 1 – Draw the line that passes through the point (-2, -1) and has
a slope of . y
y=
1 1unit left
-2x
-1
Your Turn! Do all on one (1) graph!
1. Using 1 cm to 1 unit, draw and label your x and y axes.
2. Draw the line that passes through (0, -9) and has a gradient (slope) of 2.
3. Draw the line that passes through the point (3, 5) and has a gradient (slope) of
4. Draw the graph of the line y = 2x – 3.
5. Draw the graph of the line y = 1x – 1.
