There are many different forms that lines can be written in,
the following three will be used at the BGCSE level.
Slope – Intercept Form

m – the slope/gradient
b – the y intercept
Point – Slope Form

m – the slope/gradient
(, ) is a point on the line.
Standard Form

A and B are coefficients

The Gradient (also called Slope) of a straight line shows how steep a straight line is.

DETERMING THE SLOPE
When written in slope intercept form (y = mx + c), the slope of a line is ‘m’ or the coefficient of x.
E.g. Find the slope of the following lines:

1. y = 3x + 6. 1. m = 3
2. y = 4 – 2x 2. m = -2
3. y = 3. m =
4. m =
4. y =
Y- Intercept
The y intercept tells where the line cuts the y axis.
This is always the point where x = 0!
Ex. 1 Find the y intercept in the line y = x + 3
Let x = 0
y=0+3
y = 3 (y-intercept)

If the equation is in the form y = mx + c (y = 5x + 3 or

y = -5x – 1) then the value ‘c’ will give the y intercept.

c. On your graph, state the gradient of the line.
d. On your graph, state the value of y when x = 3.
y = 7 – 3x
e. Draw the line y = -5. y = 7 – 3(5)
f. On your graph, state where the line and y = -5 intersect. y = 7 – 15

X and Y intercepts
x intercept - the point where the graph crosses the x axis.
Coordinates (a, 0) where a is any point on the x axis.

y intercept - the point where the graph crosses the y axis.

GRADIENT.
QUIZIZZ ACTIVITY
Slope Intercept Form
When written in the form y = mx + c, remember
the following:
1.“m” represents the slope. The slope tells us
how to travel from one point to the next.
2.“c” represents the y intercept. The y intercept
tells us where the graph passes the y axis.
Plotting a Line using A point on the line and the
slope.
1. Plot the first point.
2. Use the “rise over run” method to find 3 – 4 additional points.
3. Connect the points to form your line.
Example 1 – Draw the line that passes through the point (-2, -1) and has
a slope of . y

1. Plot first point.
