Recap: Viruses
Viruses –
Viruses are a specific type of malware that self-replicates by inserting
its code into other programs.
They monitor what you type, what website you visit etc.
Worms
One of the most common ways for computer worms to spread is via email spam (junk
mail).
It is estimated that the infamous ILOVEYOU worm infected about 10 percent of the
world’s internet-connected computers within just 10 days.
Trojans
As the internet has grown and millions of people are online, so has the development
of other types of malicious software such as 'Trojan software’
A trojan may:-
•Log all your keystrokes and then send the details to a remote computer. Used to
capture your passwords.
•Allow someone else to take control of your computer whilst you are online.
•Capture screen shots and send them to a remote computer, once again with the intent
of obtaining confidential or sensitive information.
Ransomware
Legend has it that the Greeks won the Trojan war by hiding in a huge,
hollowed out horse that was given as a gift to the city of Troy.
They were then able to sneak in without anyone knowing and then
captured the city and won their war.
This program sneaks in with another downloaded file and gives out
your information without you knowing it ever happened.

What are the Advantages of Using Antivirus Software?
We know that a virus is any unwanted program that enters a user’s system without their
knowledge.
Viruses performs unwanted and malicious actions that end up affecting the system’s
performance and user’s data/files.
Therefore, we can look at a computer virus as an illness of the computer, just like human
viruses that cause diseases in humans.
It was filling up the hard drive until a computer could not operate any
further.
The first computer virus for MS-DOS was "Brain" and was released in
1986.
It would overwrite the boot sector on the floppy disk and prevent the
computer from booting.
It was written by two brothers from Pakistan and was originally designed
as a copy protection.
The biggest computer virus ever is the Mydoom virus, which did an
estimated $38 billion in damages in 2004.
Other notables are the Sobig worm at $30 billion and the Klez worm at
$19.8 billion.
"The Morris" worm was the first Computer virus which spread extensively
in the wild in 1988.
