Learning Objectives:
At the end of this lesson, students should be
able to:
apply pattern recognition skills to identify
natural patterns in various contexts,
identify and connect instances where
mathematics is utilized as a human endeavor
in solving real-world problems, and;
express appreciation for the role of
mathematics in understanding and explaining
regularities in the world.
What is Mathematics?
-Mathematics is the science that deals with
the structure, order and relation that has
evolved from counting, measuring and
describing the shapes of objects.
Where is Mathematics?
Math is all round us, everything we see,
everything we do. It is the building block
for everything in our daily lives.

When do we use Mathematics?


We always use mathematics in our daily
lives without even knowing it.

Patterns in Nature
Patterns and counting are relations.
A pattern in nature is any regularly
repeated arrangement of shapes or colors.
Regularity-is the fact that the same thing
always happen in the same circumstances.
Pattern- is a discernible regularity in the
world or in a man-made design.
Example of Patterns
Meander- a series of regular sinuous
curves, bends, loops, turns, or windings in
the channel of a river, stream, or other
watercourse.
Wave- disturbance that transfers energy
through matter or space, with little or no
associated mass transport.

Foam- substance formed by trapping


pockets of gas in a liquid or solid.
Fracture or Crack
-separation of an object or material into two or more
pieces under the action of stress.

Fractal- a never-ending pattern. Fractals are


infinitely complex patterns that are self-similar
across different scales.
Symmetry- refer to a sense of harmonious
and beautiful proportion and balance.
Types of Symmetry
Reflection- is a type of symmetry in
which one half of the object reflects the
other half of the object.
Rotational- existed when a shape turned, and
the shape is identical to the origin.

Translational- if the object is translated without


changing its overall shape
Helical- simultaneously translated and
rotated in three-dimensional space along a
line known as screw axis.
Patterns in Numbers
Sequence of numbers that are formed in accordance
with a definite rule.
1. Arithmetic Sequence- same amount has been
added/subtracted (common difference).
Formula:
Example: 3, 12, 21, 30, 39, …
What is the value of 20th term?
Try this:

1.9, 14, 19, 24, 29,…


What is the value of 35th and 40th term?
2. Geometric Sequence- multiplied/divide
by the same amount (common ratio)
Example: 1,2, 4, 8, 16, _, _, _

Try this:

2. 3, 6, 12, 24, _, _, _
3. Triangular Number (Pascal’s Triangle)

- It is named for the 17th-century French


mathematician Blaise Pascal,
Pascal's triangle is the triangular array of numbers
that begins with 1 on the top and with 1's running
down the two sides of a triangle.
Fibonacci Patterns
Many sources claim this sequence was
first discovered or "invented"
by Leonardo Fibonacci.
Fibonacci numbers do appear in nature
often enough to prove they reflect some
naturally occurring patterns. You can
commonly spot these by studying the
manner in which various plants grow.
Sunflower
If you count the spirals in a consistent manner, you will always
find a Fibonacci number (0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, …).

Note that the black pattern is identical in all the images. Only
the colored lines indicating the selected spirals are different.
Shell
Fibonacci Sequence
A sequence where the next number is the
sum of two consecutive preceding
numbers.
Example: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, _, _,_

Golden Ratio- A special number which is
approximately equal to 1.618
Binomial Expansion

Binet’s Formula
Binet's Formula is an explicit formula
used to find the nth term of the Fibonacci
sequence. It is so named because it was
derived by mathematician Jacques
Philippe Marie Binet.
Formula:
Example 1: Find the 10th term of the
Fibonacci sequence: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, ...
Try this:
1. Find the 25th term of the Fibonacci
sequence: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, ...
2. Find the 20th term of the Fibonacci
sequence: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, ...
