Practical Research 2 - Organizing Data

The document discusses organizing data by inputting it into a spreadsheet and encoding values for easier processing. It provides multiple examples of encoding categorical data by assigning numeric values like 1 for "yes" and 0 for "no". The examples include encoding variables related to condominium properties, employee characteristics, vehicle types, and dormitory facilities. Statistical software like Excel, SPSS, Eviews, SATA, and SAS can then be used to analyze the encoded data.

Organizing

Data

Once data is gathered, it's crucial to effectively structure it.
Organizing data involves categorizing collected information for
easier presentation, often achieved by inputting data into a
spreadsheet. Before encoding, ensure the dataset is both
accurate and comprehensive. When faced with missing values or
unanswered items, refrain from encoding and leave those
sections blank. This applies to secondary data as well, but
having a complete dataset with no missing values is preferable.
Assuming that a researcher is interested in determining
whether the price of a condominium unit increases due
to the following factors:
1. floor location of the unit
2. number of bedrooms
3. number of bathrooms
4. size of the unit (in sq m)
5. available parking in the condominium
6. available gym
7. available swimming pool, and
8. accessibility, that is, if the condominium building is near the
national road
The variable parking, gym, pool
andnational road are answerable by yes
or no. In encoding, the number 1 can
be assigned to denote an answer of
‘YES’ and 0 for ‘NO’ to make them
numerical. This will help ease data
processing.

If the objective of a study is to determine the
relationship between salary of employees, and
years of experience, age, and gender. In an
encoded version instead of typing the words
"male" and "female", the researcher may assign
the value of 1 to male and 0 to female, assuming
that there is gender discrimi nation.

gender of the employees

To further illustrate, a researcher is
interested to determine if motorists using
Macapagal Avenue are following the speed
limit imposed by the MMDA, which is 50
kph. It shows the assigned number to the
vehicles, speed of the vehicle, whether the
driver is drunk while driving, and type of
vehicle
Vehicle, speed limit, type of vehicle,
and drunk while driving
For ease of encoding we may also
assign the value od "0" to no and "1"
to yes. Also, we may also assign the
value to "1" to sedan, "2" to 4x2, "3"
to 4x4, and "4" to pick-up.

Another instance, a researcher is interested to
determine the rental cost of dormitory near the
elliptical road in Quezon City. It shows the cost of
months rent in a dormitory in Peso, proximity from the
university in meters, availability air-conditioning,
availability of Wi-Fi, and availability of CCTV. Again,
to encode in a spreadsheet, we can assign the value of
"1" to yes, and "0" to no.

university, and existing facilities

Data analysis and procedures can be applied
using Microsoft Excel, SPSS (Statisti cal
Package forlyss Syial Sciences), Eviews
(Econometric view),SATA, SAS (Statistical
