TOPIC 4 - Functions

The document discusses relations and functions. It defines a relation as a connection between two sets of values (domain and range), which can be represented using ordered pairs, mappings, graphs or equations. A function is defined as a special type of relation where each domain value is associated with exactly one range value. The document provides examples of identifying whether relations represented as ordered pairs, mappings, graphs or equations are functions or not functions based on these definitions.

Today, let’s deal with the following:

Relations and Elementary

Functions Logic

Brianne C. Jimenez, LPT, MAEd

RELATION
is a connection
between the two sets
of values, domain (x)
.and range (y)
:Relation can be presented using
• Ordered Pairs
• Mapping
• Graphs
• Equation
:Relation can be presented using
Ordered Pairs – points in the Cartesian plane composed of (X, Y).

Mapping – ordered pairs where value of X and Y are written separately.

:Relation can be presented using
Graphs – ordered pairs plotted in the Cartesian plane.

Equation – a mathematical sentence used to present the values of

X and Y.
RELATION
FUNCTION
is a connection
is a type of relation
between the two sets
where each value of
of values, domain (x)
x (domain) is
.and range (y)
associated with
:Relation can be presented using exactly one value
• Ordered Pairs
• Mapping .from y (range)
• Graphs
• Equation
FUNCTION:
• There should be ONLY ONE
value of X for every value of Y.
• In a function, the repetition of the
domain or X value IS NOT
ALLOWED.
Identify DOMAIN and RANGE of the following
ordered pairs and tell whether the given is a
FUNCTION or NOT FUNCTION:
{(−1,0)(0,−3)(2,−3)(3,0)(4,5)} -Function
Domain: {-1, 0, 2, 3, 4}
Range: {0, -3, -3, 0, 5}
{(6,10)(−7,3)(0,4)(6,−4)} -Not Function
D: {6, -7, 0, 6}
R: {10, 3, 4, -4}
Identify DOMAIN and RANGE of the following
ordered pairs and tell whether the given is a
FUNCTION or NOT FUNCTION:
{(−2,5)(−1,0)(0,−3)(1,−4)(2,−3)} -Function
Domain: {-2, -1, 0, 1, 2}
Range: {5, 0, -3, -4, -3}
{(3,0)(4,5)(5,0)(3,-1)} -Not Function
D: {3, 4, 5, 3}
R: {0, 5, 0, -1}
All functions are relations,
but not all relations are
functions.

Identifying Functions in Equation:
Look at the exponents of “y” variable
• If it is an odd number
(1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, . . .)
then it is a FUNCTION.
• If it is an even number
(2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, . . .)
then it is NOT A FUNCTION.
...but if the given equation contains two or more “y”
variables, then it is not a function
