Multiplying Polynomials with More Than One Variable

Special Products involving Squares

a(x + y) = ax + ay (Distributive Law)

(x + y)(x − y) = x2 − y2 (Difference of 2 squares)
(x + y)2 = x2 + 2xy + y2 (Square of a sum)
(x − y)2 = x2 − 2xy + y2 (Square of a difference)
Note: (x2 - y2) ≠ (x – y)2

Multiplying Polynomials with More Than One Variable

Special Products involving Cubes

(x + y)3 = x3 + 3x2y + 3xy2 + y3 (Cube of a sum)

(x − y)3 = x3 − 3x2y + 3xy2 − y3 (Cube of a difference)

(x + y)(x2 − xy + y2) = x3 + y3 (Sum of 2 cubes)

(x − y)(x2 + xy + y2) = x3 − y3 (Difference of 2 cubes)

Factoring

Greatest Common Factor

• find greatest factor common to every term
Ex. 8x3 – 4x2 + 2x = 2x (4x2 – 2x
Grouping + 1)
• factors common to some of the terms
Ex. 7xz + 42yz + 2x +12y 7z (=x + 6y) + 2( x + 6y)
= (x + 6y ) ( 7z + 2)
Difference in Two Squares
• One of the binomials contains the sum of two terms and the other contains the
difference of two terms.
General Formula: a2 – b2 = (a – b)(a + b)
Ex. 49m 2 – 36n4 = (7m – 6n2) (7m + 6n2)
Difference of Cubes
• the difference in two cubes means that there will be two terms and each will contain perfect
cubes and the sign between the two terms will be negative
General Formula: Sum of Cubes: a 3 + b3 = (a + b)(a2 - ab + b2)
Factoring

Trinomials
• trinomials factor to two binomials in product form
• method of trial and error will be used to mentally determine the factors that satisfy
the trinomial
Ex.
x2 – 2x – 35 = ( x – 7) ( x + 5)

3y2 + 10y - 8 = ( y + 4 ) ( 3y – 2)
EXERCISES
• Perform the following operations: Factor the following:

1. () 11. x2 – (r + s)x + rs
2.
12. 3ax + 6ay + 4x + 8y
𝟐 𝟐 𝟐 𝟐
