Gyroscope
Principle

Axis of rotating body is given an angular velocity

perpendicular to the axis of spin, results in an angular
acceleration of the body about the third perpendicular axis.

Torque required to produce this acc. is active gyroscopic

torque/ couple.
Results in an reactive gyroscopic couple.
The effects due to reactive gyroscopic couple is known as
gyroscopic effect.

Three perpendicular axis

• Axis of spin
• Axis of precession
• Axis of gyroscopic
couple

Magnitude of angular velocity : length of vector

Direction of axis of rotor : Vector parallel to axis of rotor

Sense of rotation: right hand screw rule *

*Right hand screw rule:

Screw rotates clock wise away from viewer and vice versa
