Learning disabilities are disorders that affect the ability to understand or use language, do math calculations, or coordinate movements. They can be caused by heredity, problems during pregnancy/birth, or incidents after birth. Characteristics include difficulties with reading, writing, math, social skills, attention, and behavior. Learning disabilities vary in severity from mild to moderate to severe. Common types include dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia. Identification involves intelligence and achievement tests, while interventions depend on the individual and may include educational accommodations but no medications.

What is learning
disabilities ?
Disorders that affect the ability to
understand or use spoken or written
language, do mathematical
calculations and coordinate
movements. We can know that a
person has a learning disability if
he/she has a difficulty understanding
and following.
Learning disabilities have been given different definitions

Individuals With Disabilities Educations Act (IDEA)

Defines specific learning disability as a disability in one or
more of the basic psychological processes involved in
understanding or in using language, whether spoken or
written, that may manifest in terms of imperfect ability to
listen, think, speak, read, writes, spell, or to perform
mathematical calculations.
National Joint Commission Learning Disabilities (NJCLD)
 Defines learning disabilities as a general term referring to a
heterogenous group of disabilities manifested by
significant difficulties in acquiring and using listening
speaking ,reading, writing, reasoning or mathematical
abilities
American Psychiatric Association (APA)
They used the term Special Learning Disorder instead of
learning disabilities. Usually used in clinical and diagnostic
setting
They defined this as a neurodevelopmental disorder that
hinders one from learning academic skills.
Characteristics of Learners With

 Dyslexia (reading problems)

 Written Language Deficits

Causes Of Learning Disabilities

HEREDITY PROBLEMS DURING PREGNANCY

AND BIRTH INCIDENTS AFTER BIRTH
often run in the could be due to illness or
family injury before birth
Levels or Severity May Also Be Classified As:

• Mild- learning challenges with one or two areas but

students still make up for this challenge with
appropriate understanding.

• Moderate- learning skills in one or more academic

domains that the learner is unlikely to become proficient
without some intervals of intensive and specialized
teaching in school.

• Severe- learning skills in several academic domains

that the learner in unlikely to learn those skills without

Dyslexia
 is a learning difficulty that primarily affects the
skills involved in accurate and fluent word
reading and spelling.

 Characteristics features of dyslexia are

difficulties in phonological awareness , verbal
memory and verbal processing speed.

 There is no medications to treat dyslexia

instead educational interventions can teach
new ways to learn and read.
(use multisensory methods to explicitly teach
new content )

DYSCALCULIA
• Is a learning disorder that affects a person’s
ability to understand number-based information
and math.

• Some of the characteristics of dyscalculia is

difficulty remembering basic facts, slow to
perform calculations, weak mental arithmetic
skills ,trouble with counting and etc.

• In educational intervention you could possibly

provide a multisensory instruction. On the other
hand there is no medication that treats
dyscalculia.

DYSGRAPHIA
• Dysgraphia is a neurological disorder
characterized by writing disabilities .

• Characteristics of dysgraphia are poor

spacing between letters and word, awkward
inconsistent pencil grip, letter and number
reversals beyond early stages writing .

• There are no medications for dysgraphia.

Possible education intervention is allowing
the use of audio recorders and teaching
touch-typing so computers can be used as an
alternative to handwriting.

Identification and assessment of
learners with learning disabilities
• Intelligence and Achievement Test

 Standardized IQ test and individual

achievement tests are typically
administered during the referral
process

Criterion Referenced Test
Criterion referenced test, as opposed
to norm – referenced tests, compare
an individual’s score to a
predetermined criterion rather than
with other individuals .

Brigence Comprehensive Inventory

of Basic Skills

Curriculum Based
Measurement
 Also called progress
monitoring it entails
measuring the growth of
students’ proficiency in the
core skills that contribute
to success in school.
