CREATING ONLINE

TESTS WITH
MICROSOFT FORMS
OBJECTIVES FOR THE PD

• Content Objective: I will be able to CREATE a Microsoft form in order to ANALYZE a

variety of summative and formative DATA.
• Language Objective: I will use visual examples of forms as well as work with my peers in
order to determine how forms will best help me in the classroom.
QUESTIONS I HOPE TO ANSWER TODAY:

• What types of questions are available? (Slide 4)

• How are STAAR questions phrased?(Slide 7)
• What is the best practice to avoid cheating?(Slide 8)
• How can forms be used for bellringers?(Slide 21)
• What is the easiest way to view data and grades?(Slide 24)
• How can I quickly share tests to my class? (Slide 47)
• How can Forms help collaborate with the Learning Lab?(Slide 56)
• How do my students access the Immersive reader?(Slide 62)
WHAT TYPES OF QUESTIONS ARE AVAILABLE
FOR TESTS?
• The main types of questions you may be using are the following:
• Multiple choice (single answer – multiple answers).**
• Short constructed response (Changing to "Long answer" only changes the size of the
response box).*
• Ranking (placing items in a specific order)**.
• *Can be auto-graded in some cases.
• **Can always be auto-graded.
EXAMPLE TEST:

• Here is what it would look like as a teacher:

• Teacher View
• The teacher view duplicates my test without changing it; feel free to follow along and use
this test as you sample test.
• Here is what it would look like as a student:
• Student View
OTHER QUESTIONS TYPES:

• Rating (can be used as an exit ticket).

• Upload file (for when you don't want your email cluttered).
• Likert (these mirror one of the new STAAR test question types).

• None of these question types are auto-graded.

HOW ARE STAAR QUESTIONS PHRASED?

• Students often get confused with the way a question is phrased.

• Many test questions use the word "BEST" (or similar wording most likely, closest, etc.), this is confusing
because the STAAR test is designed to ensure students read all answer choices thoroughly. So, there is
usually one half correct answer.
• The English test also examines student's abilities to support ideas using evidence.
• Using academic language (analyze, summarize, describe).
• Having students either ask about or look-up words they do not know or understand. They will only have
dictionaries for the English tests, but this will also broaden their vocabulary.
• *For multiple-choice, one of the new testing types has students select TWO correct answers.
WHAT IS THE BEST PRACTICE TO AVOID
CHEATING?
• Make an original copy of the test; then create copies for each class that will take the test. (slide 9)
• Create test using sections. (Slide 13)
• Option 1: sections make it easier to shuffle the questions on your test. Simply shuffle the
sections vs. Shuffling every single question. This helps with grading any questions that are not
auto-graded.
• Option 2: select for the test to automatically shuffle the question. When shuffling questions, you
can lock a specific section of questions. (Slide 15)
• There is an option when creating multiple choice questions to shuffle the answer choices. (Slide 17)
• If you share using Clever, delete the link after sharing the link.
• If you use Teams, share the test as an assignment.
HOW TO MAKE A COPY OF A FORM:

HOW CAN FORMS BE USED FOR
BELLRINGERS/EXIT TICKETS?
• Oftentimes we want to know what our students know or how our students feel.
• Forms are an easy way to do so!Click here
• The teacher view can be up on the board refreshing while the students type to show their
answers without showing the students names.
• The perks of using forms for bellringers is that some DATA using forms.
HOW CAN FORMS BE USED FOR
BELLRINGERS/EXIT TICKETS? (CONTINUED)
• Any questions you would normally use for a bellringer, you can use in forms.
• You can also customize a message for each incorrect answer to explain why it is
incorrect and do the same for the correct answers. This is helpful for days that you have a
lot planned and would rather students be given the reasoning vs. having a mini lesson
over what they missed.
• Having students get used to answering questions on the computer will help when it comes
to the STAAR test.
• Most of the new STAAR testing types can be duplicated on forms.
HOW COULD YOU USE FORMS FOR
BELLRINGERS IN CLASS?
• Short response: Click here to Answer
WHAT IS THE EASIEST WAY TO VIEW DATA AND
GRADES?
• There are two ways to get DATA from your forms. One is on an excel sheet, and the other
is on the Forms website. (Slide 25)
• Grades are easiest to find when on excel if you shared the form through Clever, or on
TEAMS if you created an assignment with said form.(Slide 34)

HOW CAN I QUICKLY SHARE MY FORM ON
CLEVER:

You can quickly share your form to all of your students

from messages through an announcement,
announcements per class, or to each student directly.

If you don't want the students to complete the test

before their class, you can send it as class
announcement instead of to all of you students at once.
HOW CAN I QUICKLY SHARE MY FORM ON
CLEVER:

You can delete announcements once your students open

the form. I usually give them about 2-3 minutes before
deleting the link, this is so I can see who is completing
their assignments on time.

can also search for the form you want.
HOW CAN FORMS HELP COLLABORATE WITH
THE LEARNING LAB?
• When sharing a form there are three options collect responses, duplicate, and collaborate.
• Collect responses: How you get student answers.
• Duplicate: Shares the form, but has the recipient create a copy. You cannot see the
responses or changes to the form.
• Collaborate: You can see any responses to the form and any changes made by the person
you are collaborating with.
HOW CAN FORMS HELP COLLABORATE WITH
THE LEARNING LAB?
• When sharing a form there are three options collect responses, duplicate, and collaborate.
• Collect responses: This is a quick way to see what students know.
• Duplicate: This is for if you are giving a similar test as someone else and want to give
them a template.
• Collaborate: This one is helpful for when working with the learning lab. I would make a
copy of you test first instead of sending them the original.
HOW CAN FORMS HELP COLLABORATE WITH
THE LEARNING LAB?

Most of the settings with options will pop

up with three dots throughout Microsoft.
HOW CAN FORMS HELP COLLABORATE WITH
THE LEARNING LAB?

Collect responses: to get student answers.

This will generate a link, QR code, or
embeding option.
HOW CAN FORMS HELP COLLABORATE WITH
THE LEARNING LAB?

Collaborate and Duplicate options: these

will generate links you can share with who
you are working with.
HOW CAN FORMS HELP COLLABORATE WITH
THE LEARNING LAB?
• The collaborate option has a few benefits:
• Learning lab gets an answer key and the form that they can share with students to collect
responses or print. They can also modify tests if needed by deleting answer choices or
questions.
• If a student receives text-to-speech assistance on the STAAR, they can get used to hearing
the computer voice reading the questions and answers. (This is done by turning on
immersive reader shown on the next slide.)
• The immersive reader will also translate for any student who needs it.
HOW TO ENABLE AND USE THE IMMERSIVE
READER:

Using the three dots the only

option that will pop up is the
"enable immersive reader"
option.
HOW TO ENABLE AND USE THE IMMERSIVE
READER:

At first glance it will look as

though nothing has changed;
however, when the students
hover over a question the
immersive reader book will pop-
up.
HOW TO ENABLE AND USE THE IMMERSIVE
READER:
This is what the immersive
reader looks like per question.
The students can hear the
question and answers.
HOW TO ENABLE AND USE THE IMMERSIVE
READER:
To translate the students must
select the book on the right.
HOW TO ENABLE AND USE THE IMMERSIVE
READER:
Then they select the language.
When the students return to
answer the question, the
question will be in English
again.
