HISTORY OF COMMUNICATION
TECHNOLOGY
• The development of communication technology can be traced back to
the invention of the telegraph in the early 19th century. Samuel Morse
is highly recognized for the development of the telegraph.
• The telegraph enabled the transmission of messages over long
distances, revolutionizing communication.
• The telephone was invented in the late 1800s, which allowed people to
communicate with each other over long distances in real-time.
• The development of electronic computers in the mid-20th century
marked a significant milestone in the history of communication
technology.
Computer Hardware and
Software

• Computer Hardware and Software are two essential components of a

computer system. Hardware refers to the physical components of a
computer, while software refers to the programs and applications that
run on the computer. Below are some of the key components of
computer hardware and software:
HARDWARE
• It includes the physical components of a computer
system, such as the central processing unit (CPU),
memory, input/output devices, and storage devices,
as well as the way these components interact with
each other.
• The CPU is the "brain" of the computer, responsible
for processing data and executing instructions.

Input and Output Devices

• Input and output devices are two important types of computer

hardware that allow users to interact with a computer system. Input
devices are used to enter data and instructions into a computer system,
while output devices are used to display or produce the results of data
processing. Below are some examples of input and output devices:
INPUT DEVICES

• Keyboard: A keyboard is a common input device used to enter text

and commands into a computer system. It consists of a set of keys,
including letters, numbers, and special characters.
• Mouse: A mouse is another common input device used to control the
movement of a cursor on a computer screen. It typically consists of a
ball or optical sensor that detects movement and one or more buttons
for clicking.

• Scanner: A scanner is an input device used to digitize physical
documents and images. It captures an image of the document or image
and converts it into a digital format that can be stored and processed
on a computer.
• Microphone: A microphone is an input device used to capture sound
and input audio into a computer system. It is commonly used for voice
recording, video conferencing, and other audio applications.
OUT PUT DEVICES
• Monitor: A monitor is a common output device used to display
images and text on a computer screen. It typically consists of a flat-
panel display that uses liquid crystal or LED technology to produce
images.
• Printer: A printer is an output device used to produce hard copies of
documents and images. There are various types of printers, including
inkjet, laser, and dot matrix printers.
Output devices cont’d
• Speaker: A speaker is an output device used to produce audio output
from a computer system. It is commonly used for listening to music,
watching videos, and other audio applications.
• Projector: A projector is an output device used to display images or
video onto a larger surface, such as a wall or screen. It is commonly
used for presentations and other visual applications.
SOFTWARE
• Operating systems and application software are two important types of
software used in computer systems.
A. Operating Systems:
• An operating system (OS) is a type of software that manages the
resources and activities of a computer system. It is the software that
provides the interface between the hardware and software applications,
allowing users to interact with the computer system.
Functions of operating system
• Some common functions of operating systems include:
 Managing hardware resources, such as CPU, memory, and storage
devices
Providing a user interface for interaction with the computer system
Managing software applications and processes
Controlling access to system resources and data
Managing system security and user accounts
• Examples of popular operating systems include Microsoft Windows,
macOS, Linux, and Unix.
Application Software

• Application software is a type of software used to perform specific

tasks or functions on a computer system. It is designed to run on top of
an operating system and is often referred to as "user software."
• Productivity software, such as Microsoft Office, which includes tools
for word processing, spreadsheet management, and presentation
creation
• Graphic design software, such as Adobe Photoshop, which is used for
image editing and graphic design
Application software cont’d

Web browsers, such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, which are

used to access and view content on the internet
Media players, such as iTunes or VLC, which are used to play audio
and video files
Gaming software, such as Steam, which is used to access and play
video games
