The editorial discusses the role of youth in nation-building and overcoming challenges. It notes that over 23 million Filipino youth face difficulties that hamper their dreams, such as 4 million stopping school in 2013 and rising poverty. It also mentions some becoming juvenile delinquents. However, it cites a positive view that if youth use their time and skills productively, the Philippines could have a strong economy in 40 years due to its growing youth population. The editorial stresses that youth are key to a country's progress, especially when they serve the nation well.

What is an
editorial article?
EDITORIAL
 An article that states the newspaper’s
stance on a particular issue. Basically,
it is a persuasive essay that offers a
solution to a problem.
The editorial is considered the soul of the
newspaper for it stirs the conscience of the readers
to action.

 It influences and molds public opinion. It is

usually written in formal language, expressing the
stand of the paper on controversial issues of the
day.
 It is usually unsigned, or published
without a byline, because it represents
the newspaper’s opinion, not the
writer’s.
PARTS OF THE EDITORIAL

1. News Peg (Introduction) is a brief statement about the news

event upon which the editorial is based or an existing issue
that needs to be solved right away as well as the stand about
the news event.
2. The body proves or justifies the reaction or stand already
made in the introduction.
3. The conclusion, oftentimes called the punchline or clincher,
summarizes the editorial’s stand on issues.

Radical Cure

Duterte administration’s intensified anti-criminality campaign called Tokhang (Toktok-

Hangyo) has caused diverse reactions among the Filipinos. While some believe that this fuels extra-
judicial and summary killings by the vigilante groups, it seeks more to overcome societal ills brought
by the imminence of drug addiction in the country.

Drug addiction has become rampant that it needs total eradication through absolute means.
Statistics of drug abuse cases reveals that in 2015, there were a total of 5,402 admissions for
rehabilitation as reported by the different facilities nationwide. The unreported number of users which is
undeniably overwhelming remains unknown. And it is devastating to note that various forms of heinous
crimes are significantly correlated with distortion of minds and behavior of every Juan dela Cruz
victimized by this vice.
The implementation of the Project Double Barrel or locally named
Project TOKHANG from Visayan terms “Toktok/Hangyo” is an
indisputable course of action in today’s increasing rates of drug addiction.
It encourages drug users, pushers or even drug lords to yield peacefully
because the surrenderees are subjected to documentation, made to
undertake an oath not to engage in illegal activities and aided to submit
themselves to drug rehabilitation. In fact, The Duterte administration’s
aggressive campaign against illegal drugs in its first 21 days has already
yielded 240 slain “drug suspects” nationwide, with 14,000 drug
users voluntarily surrendering. Aside from that, P29 million worth of
illegal drugs have been seized in the Caraga region alone.
With this accomplishment however, human rights groups decry the
series of killings of drug suspects by unknown assailants as alarming.
They say that this move to destroy drug dilemma in the entire country is
detrimental to drug peddlers whose right to be pronounced innocent until
proven guilty is not considered and when human rights are violated with
possible vigilante killings. Needless to say, it sounds disgusting when they
seldom bark with the proliferation of rape, robbery, murder and other
forms of criminality brought by insane minds who have fallen into the pits
of drug addiction.
In this quest, the PNP and AFP who have been empowered for this
task must be vigilant enough in the growing statistics of existing vigilante
killings and even condone summary executions. They must implement
maximum tolerance in seizing these drug related personalities. But they
should not be alone in this endeavor. If we believe that a nation is only as
strong as its people, everyone should take part in the reformation by
exposing drug-related incidents instead of protecting them. The
Commission on Human Rights must take its full responsibility and
accountability in keeping the right to life both of the inflictor and the
inflicted.
Furthermore, this gargantuan menace needs an intensified advocacy program
of the government to convince families to love and support those who have drug
problems and need to undergo treatment and rehabilitation. The government should
continuously improve treatment and rehabilitation programs, and conduct of in- house
seminars and dialogues to better serve those who need interventions.
Indeed, to reconstruct our ailing country worsened by dosage of indifference
by the previous governance requires a radical cure. Everyone should pull together to
wage war against drugs and vanquish enormity. It may be painful and bloody in the
process as what the Duterte administration has been warning since he started his
office. But it would be scarier when the government just yield to inconsistency and
compromise firmness in this battle.

Youth, Strength of the Nation

At an early age, almost twenty-three million Filipino
youths face different challenges in life which hamper the
attainment of their dreams. Still, the country holds a big trust
that the youths would not forsake their responsibilities in
serving the country.

Kabataan, Lakas ng Bayan
Ayon sa Function Literacy Education and Mass Media Survey,

According to Function Literacy Education and Mass Media Survey,
four million Filipino youths stopped going to school in the year 2013.
Annual report of the Poverty Indicator Survey of the Philippine Statistics
Authority also revealed that the poverty incidence of the country increased
to 2.25% in the first half of the year 2014. These impediments prevent the
vision of the youths to serve the country.

Bukod dito, sinabi ng Department of Social Welfare and

Aside from this, the Department of Social Welfare and
Development says that there are 9,390 males and 704 females

delinquents or young people deviating the laws. With this data,
how can the youths become good leader or models?

kabataang may mahahalagang kasanayan.

Nevertheless, Rappler reported the positive view point of NHDC,
an International Investment Bank that Philippines might be one of those
advancing towards a booming economy in the next 40 years because of
the rapid increase of youths with relevant skills. It is a fact that the youths
are the keys to progress of the country especially if they use effectively
their time, competence, and energy in a worthwhile way.

Mahigit-kumulang sa 40 bahagdan ang bumobotong populasyon
ang mga kabataan ayon din sa Rappler. Nahihinuhang mahigit sampung

Youth, Strength of the Nation
According to Rappler, more or less 40% of the voting
population are youths. It can be inferred that more than 10
million can be new voters within the years 2010-2040. This time
can be critical for political and social changes of the country if
the youths could use their privilege to vote wisely.

STRUCTURE/FORMULA

Youth, Strength of the Nation

No matter how the youths are disturbed with a lot of burdens in
tackling a brighter tomorrow, they have the time, opportunity
and strength to overcome whatever obstacles they may face. The
government and public sectors, more importantly the families,
must help in guiding the Filipino youths to prepare themselves
for the bigger leadership roles in the country.
COLUMN WRITING

pagkakamali kahit gaano man ito kasakit.
katiwalian.

Kaya napapanahon ang Freedom of Information Bill.

A CALL FOR GLOBAL SOLIDARITY IN RESPONSE TO
CLIMATE CHANGE
A TIME TO WEEP
Truly, this is a time for weeping. For Contemplacion
who was denied a fair hearing. For the husband and children she
left behind. For a country that can’t provide for its own citizens.
For a government that has lost so much of its pride and bearings
that it won’t lift a finger to protect its own citizens.
A MATTER OF ACCEPTANCE
However, despite being a huge and complex problem, the
cure to this cancer, racism, is relatively easy. To totally eliminate
racism is a matter of acceptance. Acceptance must be practiced
to maintain a strong and harmonious relationship towards other
races. In that way, racism will be gone.
RESPONSIBILITY
Just like what Spiderman said, a great power comes with a great
responsibility. In this case, government officials can use the money
to aid the less-fortunate or they will succumb to their worldly
desires. But still, the ones who will suffer the most are us, the
citizens, who pay the taxes without getting any benefits in return. We
should not pamper and allow those who are in their godly seats do
nothing. Let’s expose their illegal and unjust exploits. We should
start acting now, or else, who will?
UNWAVERING HEARTS
The solution to this problem regarding the economy
of our country is relatively simple. If we would just
combine our unwavering hearts with the willingness
to act, nothing could go wrong.
A LAST RESORT

The Freedom of Information Bill is not just an ordinary bill that

should be implemented; it is the last resort of the government if
they want the people to keep on believing them. Gaining the
trust of every citizen should be the goal of the government in
order for our country to prosper.
EQUAL SECURITY

The welfare of every teacher should be equally secured just like

those of the students. Removing the power of a teacher to
discipline a student is really ironic and counter-intuitive to the
purpose of the Anti-Bullying Law-which is to discipline
students.
PRACTICE
Identify the news/event and the stand of the news peg.
1. The Department of Education (DepEd) welcomes the signing of the Anti-Bullying Law (RA 10627)
which ‘protects students from bullying and other forms of violence that may be inflicted by adults,
persons of authority, and fellow students.’ This maybe the knight in shining armor of students because
finances or bad grades are not the only source of worries for students, bullying is another.

2. If the nation is to emerge stronger from the current political crisis, it will require responsible behavior
from both sides of the political fence. Responsible behavior does not involve switching off house
microphones while opposition members are trying to argue their case. And responsible behavior does
not involve throwing a tantrum and tossing documents into the air, then stomping out of the session hall
when there is still room for reasonable debate.
3. The long-awaited Anti-Bullying Law was finally enacted on September
18 with the obvious goal of reducing the incidents of bullying in
schools throughout the country which was welcomed fully by
educators and students alike.

4. Philippines just recently suffered a lot of successive ordeals such as the

crisis in Zamboanga, magnitude 7.2 earthquake in the provinces of
Bohol and Cebu, and the super typhoon Yolanda which has
undoubtedly shaken the very foundations of our society.
CHARACTERISTICS
1. interesting, brief and forceful;
2. clear and has a moral purpose, has sound reasoning and has the
power to influence public opinion. (arguments/sound reasoning lead
logically to the conclusion)
3. factual and provides pertinent information. (arguments
to support the stand must be based on facts)
4. Brief & concise, 250-300 words in five to six paragraphs;
5. has a pro-active approach to make the situation better by using
constructive criticism and by giving solutions
6. has a solid and concise conclusion; opinion that
powerfully summarizes the writer’s opinion
7. opinions of the writer must be delivered in a
professional manner; (Good editorials engage issues, not
personalities and should refrain from name calling or other petty tactics of
persuasion.)
8.has no bitterness, bias & fear. They make for weaknesses no
matter how much they bluster. (complain loudly, protest)
9. usually written in formal Language.
10. must observe unity, coherence, emphasis and grammatical correctness
DO’S AND DON’TS in writing an Editorial

 Think original thought.

 Provide strong evidence to support your stance.
 Write in third person (he, she, they) or first person plural (we,
not I).
 Use active voice.
 Be mature, fair and responsible.
 Offer a solution.
 Avoid inclusive words such as always or never.
 Win the reader’s interest with an impelling lead paragraph.
 Avoid generalities by using plenty of facts and by telling what
these facts mean.
 Do not preach, scold, or moralize.
 Relate editorials directly to the lives of the readers.
 Write simply.
 Develop the editorial from only one specific, limited idea, phrased
in one sentence and expanded it into the body.
 Sentences and paragraphs should be relatively short.
 Research your topic and find out what is happening and what
went on in the past.
 Know the facts and be able to refer in your argument.
 Use facts and details to back up your opinion and help you make
your case.
 Leave your readers with a lasting impression—a strong point that
will make them consider your point of view.
 Do not preach to the reader. A good editorial will make the
readers notice of the situation and form their own opinions on
the issue.
