OBJECTIVES

1. Familiarize the properties of liquids

2. Relate IMFA to the properties of liquids

3. Determine how temperature affects the properties of liquids

4. Explain the properties of water using IMFA

PROPERTIES OF LIQUIDS

1. Surface Tension
2. Capillary Action
3. Viscosity
4. Vapor Pressure
5. Boiling Point

SURFACE TENSION

It is the amount of energy

that is needed to
increase the surface area
of a liquid

SURFACE TENSION

Liquids with STRONGER

IMFA have HIGHER
SURFACE TENSION

CAPILLARY ACTION

It is the tendency of a liquid

to rise against gravity into a
small narrow tube

capillary action = cohesion + adhesion

CAPILLARY ACTION

Cohesion – IMF between the molecules of a liquid

that allows them to attract the same type
of molecules

Adhesion – the net attractive force between a liquid’s

molecules and molecules of other type

CAPILLARY ACTION

The STRONGER the IMFA, the GREATER the

adhesion/cohesion

VISCOSITY

It is the internal resistance

of a liquid to flow.

VISCOSITY

Liquids with
STRONGER IMFA are
MORE VISCOUS

VAPOR PRESSURE

It is the pressure exerted by a

gas molecule

Liquids with STRONGER IMFA

have LOWER vapor pressure

BOILING POINT

It is the temperature at
which the liquid starts
turning into gas.

Liquids with STRONGER IMFA

have HIGHER boiling point

PROPERTIES OF WATER

• Water is a universal solvent.

• It has high specific heat capacity (the energy required
to raise the temperature of one gram of substance by
one degree).
• Solid water (ice) is less dense than liquid water.
• It exhibits capillary action.
