This document provides information about cell structure and function:
- It describes the major components of animal and plant cells, including the cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, mitochondria, chloroplasts, and other organelles.
- The key differences between animal and plant cells are explained, such as plant cells having a cell wall and chloroplasts.
- An activity is assigned for students to draw detailed diagrams of animal and plant cells, labeling the organelles and describing their main functions.

Cell Structure & Function
Learning objectives After this lesson, students will be able to:
• Describe the major components of a cell,
including the cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, ribosome, endoplasmic reticulum, etc.
• Appreciate and identify the differences between
a plant and animal cell and their organelles. Introduction activity Name and describe three different organelles between an animal cell and a plant cell. Eukaryotic cells • Contain organelles surrounded by membranes • Most living organisms “Typical” Animal Cell “Typical” Plant Cell Cell Parts Organelles Surrounding the Cell Cell Membrane • Outer membrane of cell that controls movement in and out of the cell. • Double layer Cell Wall • Most commonly found in plant cells & bacteria • Supports & protects cells Inside the Cell Nucleus • Directs cell activities • Contains and protects genetic material - DNA Nucleolus • Inside nucleus • Contains RNA to build proteins Cytoplasm • Gel-like mixture • Holds the organelles in place and fills the cell. Endoplasmic Reticulum • Moves materials around in cell • Smooth type: Synthesize lipids. • Rough type: Synthesize proteins. Ribosomes • Each cell contains thousands • Make proteins • Found on ribosomes & floating throughout the cell Mitochondria • Produces energy through chemical reactions • Controls level of water and other materials in cell • Recycles and decomposes proteins, fats, and carbohydrates Golgi apparatus • Packs the proteins so they can get out the cell. Lysosomes • Digest and recycle material. Large central vacuole • Contains water solution • Help plants maintain shape Chloroplast • Usually found in plant cells • Contains green chlorophyll • Where photosynthesis takes place Activity: Cell drawing In teams of 4 (no more) Draw the animal and plant cell on a cardboard. (I expect a detailed job)
All work must contain:
• Identification of organelles with their names. • The main function of each organelle • Colors, markers and materials that you prefer • Be very creative! • Use all your available space.
