Direct and Indirect Speech
INDIRECT
SPEECH
GRADE 10
DIRECT SPEECH
In this form, the actual words of the speaker are put in quotes “”.
Example: Amna said, “I am very busy now.”
In the above example the Speaker i.e.
o Amna is known as Reporter,
o Said is known as Reporting verb and
o “I am very busy now.” is known as Reported Speech.
INDIRECT SPEECH
In this form, the actual words of the speaker are transformed and said/written in a simple
manner.
Example: Amna said that she was very busy then.
If the reporting verb is in the past tense, then the direct
sentence is changed in its past tense.
The tense of direct speech remains unchanged when the BASIC RULES

4. Her husband informed her that he wouldn't go to the office that day as he wasn't feeling
well.
5. My father expressed his fear that I had caught cold again.

INTO INDIRECT SPEECH.
1. The doctor said to this patient, “Are you taking the medicine prescribed to you regularly?”
2. Her friend said to her, “Can you spare your book for me for a week?”
3. She said to him, “Can I do anything for you?”
4. His mother said to him, “Will you come home in the evening in time?”
5. His friend said to him, “Did I not warn you against this before hand?”
ANSWERS
1. The doctor asked the patient if they were taking the prescribed medicine regularly.
2. Her friend asked her if she could spare her book for a week.
3. She asked him if she could do anything for him.
4. His mother asked him if he would come home in the evening in time.
