GROUP
D i re c ti o n :
ACTIVITY:
 The class will be divided into two groups.
 Each group will select a representative while the
rest of the class shall perform the same task that
will be given in their respective seats.
 Students will draw a Cartesian Coordinate Plane
then plot A(2,2).
 Students will draw point B where B is a moving
point at a distance 3 from point A.

Lesson objective:
• At the end of the discussion, the
students should be able to
identi fy the radius and center of a
circle given its equati on, compute
for the equati on of a circle given
the center and the radius and
diff erenti ate the standard and
general form of the equati on of
the circle.
Observe!
STANDARD FORM:
(𝑥 − ℎ) + (𝑦 − 𝑘) = 𝑟
2 2 2

GENERAL FORM:
𝑥 + 𝑦 + 𝐴𝑥 + 𝐵𝑦 + 𝐶 = 0
2 2
• Using the Standard Form, the equati on of a circle
can be determined if the radius and center of the
circle is given.
Example:
Write the equati on of a circle whose center is
(2,5) and radius 4.
(h,k) = (2,5) r = 4
(x - h) + (y – k) = r
2 2 2

(x - 2) + (y – 5) = 4
2 2 2

(x - 2) + (y – 5) = 16 Eq u a ti o n o f t h e c i rc l e i n s t a n d a r d fo r m
2 2
• The equati on of a circle in standard form can
be expressed in general form when it is
expanded.
Taking the latt er as an example:
(x - 2) + (y – 5) = 16
2 2

(x -4x+4) + (y -10y+25) = 16
2 2

x - 4x + 4 + y - 10y + 25 -16 = 0
2 2

x + y – 4x – 10y + 13 = 0  Eq u ati o n o f t h e c i rc l e
2 2

i n ge n e ra l fo r m
• On the contrary, the radius and center of a circle can be
determined given the general equati on of the circle.
Find the center and the radius of a circle with the equati on
x 2 + y 2 – 6x – 8y + 21 = 0.
• x 2 + y 2 – 6x – 8y + 21 = 0
x 2 + y 2 – 6x – 8y = -21
(x 2 – 6x + 9) + (y 2 – 8y + 16) = -21 +9 + 16 By completi ng the
square
(x – 3) 2 + (y – 4) 2 = 2 2  Equati on of the circle in standard
form
Therefore (h, k) = (3, 4) and r=2
Board work
• Write the equati on of a circle
whose center is in the point (2, 3)
and radius 2.
Board work
1. Write the equati on of a circle whose center is
(2,3) and radius 2.
(h,k) = (2,3) r = 2
• (x - h) 2 + (y – k) 2 = r 2
(x - 2) 2 + (y – 3) 2 = 2 2
(x - 2) 2 + (y – 3) 2 = 4 E q u a ti o n of the circle in standard form

• (x - 2) 2 + (y – 3) 2 = 4
(x 2-4x+4) + (y 2-6y+9) = 4
x 2 - 4x + 4 + y 2 - 6y + 9 -4 = 0
x 2 + y 2 – 4x – 6y + 5 = 0  E q u a ti o n o f t h e c i r c l e i n g e n e r a l
